Pittsburgh, Pa. – In front of a sell-out, standing room only crowd of over a thousand spectators, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team returned to conference action as the University of Alabama-Huntsville paid a visit to Clearview Arena on Friday night.
RMU picked up two penalties early in the first period, and the Chargers found a way to capitalize as Alabama-Huntsville scored a power play goal at 9:03. Defenseman Davide Nicoletti found a loose puck and squeaked a shot behind Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/ Bay State Breakers) give UAH the 1-0 lead.
UAH threw 13 shots on net in the first while the Colonials had seven of their own.
After killing off the Chargers' first power-play of the middle frame, Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) exited the box and returned to the ice determined the even the game. Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) dug the puck out of the corner, and hit Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners) at the point. Blazek then blasted a shot and Lewis deflected it in for the goal at 11:52 of the second. The assist was the first of Blazek's RMU career.
At 19:23, junior defenseman Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) flew out of the penalty box and picked up a pass from freshman Brendan Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Jersey Hitmen). All alone, Urban streaked into the zone and beat the UAH netminder, Cameron Talbot, to give RMU its first lead of the night. Jamison recorded his first career point with the assist.
With six minutes to go, Alabama-Huntsville turned up the heat as they knotted the score at two when Keenan Desmet slipped the puck behind Ostergard for the UAH goal.
Just minutes later, the Colonials found themselves with a much needed, 36 seconds of a five-on-three situation. Although Robert Morris did not convert on the two-man advantage, RMU still got the power-play goal when James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) fired a slapper from top of the zone that Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) tipped in for the game-winning goal. The secondary assist was awarded to Blazek at 17:36 of the third.
Ostergard made 30 saves in his fifth win of the 2009-10 season. Overall, Robert Morris outshot Alabama-Huntsville 41-32 in the victory.
By defeating UAH, 3-2, Robert Morris picks up its third straight win. The Colonials (6-12-3 ; 2-4-2) will continue against the Chargers tomorrow night at Clearview Arena at 7:05 p.m.
