Pittsburgh, Pa. – On Sunday afternoon, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team took to the ice for the second game of its series against Lake Superior State. After a high scoring affair on Saturday night, Sunday's contest got off to a more subdued start as the game featured aggressive defensive play by both squads.
Late in the first, Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) was awarded a penalty shot after he was tripped up on his way to the Laker net. However LSSU netminder, Pat Inglis, came up with the save to keep the game scoreless as the teams headed into the first intermission.
Robert Morris also had two power play opportunities in the first period, and held the advantage on shots, 7-5.
After another quiet start to the second period, Lake Superior State finally found the back of the net at 8:57 when Matt Cowie struck with his first of the weekend. With a 1-0 lead, the Lakers added a second score with 1:35 remaining in the session as Rick Schofield tacked on a second LSSU goal only seconds into a power play.
Despite being down two goals, RMU was still outshooting Lake Superior State, 21-17.
Although the Colonials had three more man-advantages during the third period, Inglis continued to make big saves for the Lakers and shutout Robert Morris, 2-0.
For the fourth consecutive game, RMU outshot their opponent. Shots on goal in Sunday's match up were 30-24.
Sophomore goaltender, Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made his 13th start of the 2009-10 season and stopped 22 shots.
With the loss, the Colonials move to 3-12-3 overall, and 1-4-2 in conference play. On Friday, Robert Morris will host the nation's top team when #1 Miami (Ohio) visits for the annual Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase at Mellon Arena. The RMU women's squad will play Connecticut at 2 p.m., while the men will face off against the Red Hawks at 8:05 p.m.
