Box Score Cleveland, Ohio - The Robert Morris University volleyball team won a game, but was unable to take the match from Cleveland State in its 2010 non-conference finale as the 18-4 Vikings prevailed, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Woodling Gym.
Sophomore Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) led the Colonial effort with her third career double-double on the strength of a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs while also adding two blocks and an ace. It was the ninth consecutive match in which Monger has collected double figures in the dig department, the longest streak by a Colonial since Alaina Gibson pulled the trick near the end of the 2007 season. The 12 kills represented the fifth time this season that Monger has reached double-digit kills.
Similar to its performance Sunday against St. Francis (N.Y.), Robert Morris outblocked its opponent by a slim margin, 10-9, but it was enough to extend the Colonials' streak. RMU, ranked 19th nationally in blocks per game entering the week, has not been outblocked by an opponent in its last 17 matches. Senior captain Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) the reigning conference co-player of the week, and sophomore Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) each recorded five rejections to lead the Colonial blocking effort. With her performance, Graham moved within eight blocks of becoming just the third Colonial ever to reach the 400-block plateau.
After the Colonials and Vikings split the first 12 points of the opening game, Cleveland State went on a tear, taking 12 of the next 14 to open up an 18-8 advantage. Robert Morris closed the gap to seven at 19-12 but could get no closer as Cleveland State took the first game by an even 10 points.
Cleveland State carried its momentum into the second game as the Vikings claimed 14 of the first 20 points in game two. The Colonials played the Vikings nearly even from that point on, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit, and RMU fell by nine in game two.
Robert Morris got into the game much quicker in the third contest as the Colonials used a four-point run to take an 8-4 lead. Cleveland State whittled away at the edge and cut it to one at 13-12, but Robert Morris refused to give in and won three straight rallies to push its edge back to four. The Colonials led by as many seven in the closing points and extended the match with a 25-20 victory.
The Vikings responded in game four, taking the first four points and opening up an eight-point lead after 16 points were played. The squads split the next 14 points evenly before Cleveland State used a 6-2 run to close the game and the match.
Freshman Alex Deines (Centennial, Colo. / Littleton), the reigning league rookie of the week, led RMU with a team-high 20 assists, marking the fifth consecutive match in which she has totaled at least 20. Senior captain Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) led Robert Morris with a team-high 11 digs, registering double digits in that category for the 14th time this season.
After concluding non-conference play, Robert Morris will play its final seven matches against Northeast Conference (NEC) foes. RMU will remain on the road this weekend as the Colonials will play a different NEC opponent on three consecutive days from Saturday, Oct. 30 to Monday, Nov. 1--Robert Morris will match up with Central Connecticut State, Bryant and Fairleigh Dickinson, respectively.
