PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team picked up a overtime win Saturday knocking off Colgate, 3-2.
Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) scored a 1:03 into overtime to give the Colonials their first overtime victory of the season. The win was the first for the Colonials (11-4-2, 7-4-2) against the Raiders (3-11-1, 0-5-1) and keeps Robert Morris unbeaten in non-conference play this season with a 4-0-0 mark.
The Colonials took the lead late in the first period when Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) score a power-play goal with 44 seconds left in the frame. South scored off a pair of excellent passes by Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners) and James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears). Both goalies were busy in the first period as Eric Mihalik made 15 saves for Colgate and Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) posted 12 first-period stops for the Colonials.
Colgate evened the game at one in the second period with an extra-attacker goal from Francois Brisebois. The goal came on a delayed penalty call. Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice) earned a hooking call but play did not stop allowing the Raiders' netminder to skate the bench giving Colgate a 6-on-5 opportunity.
Robert Morris retook the lead late in the second period when Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) moved his point streak to four games and his goal streak to three games. Urban's goal came during a two man advantage for the Colonials and the senior assistant captain found the net with just 24 second left in the period.
Austin Smith tied the game with 47 seconds left in regulation but the Longpre grabbed the win for the Colonials in overtime. Levine, the Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week last week, played well in net for Robert Morris making 30 stops and allowing just two goals both scored with an extra attacker on the ice.
Robert Morris and Colgate return to action tomorrow at the Island Sports Center with puck drop set for 4:05 p.m. The game can be heard live at RMUColonials.com and on Pittsburgh Penguins HD radio.
