Colonials Fall in Heartbreaking CHA Semi-Final, 1-0

Niagara, N.Y. -  On Friday afternoon in Dwyer Arena, the Robert Morris University hockey team saw their hopes of a CHA Championship come to a devastating end as they were ousted from the CHA tournament by the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  In a hard-hitting and fast paced contest, the Colonials never found the break they were looking for as they fell short in the 1-0 loss to the Chargers.

In a penalty filled match-up, RMU and UAH held the other scoreless through the first period as both teams came up empty handed on two power play opportunities.  The Chargers owned shots, 11-9, as Robert Morris only put two shots on goal during their man-advantages.

Colonial starting goaltender, Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers), held strong in net through a third Alabama-Huntsville power play at the start of the second period.  However, the Chargers finally broke through with what would be their game-winning score at the 11:57 mark of the middle frame.

Neil Ruffini netted his ninth of the season to give UAH a 1-0 lead with assists from Brennan Barker and Keenan Desmet.

RMU outshot the Chargers in the second, 13-7.

Still grasping onto the one goal lead in the third, the Colonials continued to fire away at UAH netminder, Camron Talbot.  Talbot continued to make spectacular saves as he managed to shut out RMU on numerous close calls.

Although Robert Morris edged Alabama-Huntsville, 26-24 on overall shots, the Chargers skated away with the close win that propels them to the CHA Championship game.

Ostergard played a very solid game between the pipes as he made 23 saves and allowed just one Charger goal.

Robert Morris (10-19-5 ; 6-9-3) completes its season tomorrow in the CHA consolation game.  The Colonials will face the loser of the Bemidji State/Niagara contest at 3:00 p.m.
