Buffalo, N.Y. - March 6, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials fell to the Canisius Griffins, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. With the loss the Colonials drop to 1-2 on the season, while Canisius improves to 2-2.
Courtney Sicinski (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) led the Colonials with three assists and one goal for four points. Senior Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y. / Old Dominion) finished with two goals and one assist and Ali Gibbons (Candia, N.H. / Machester) and Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) each chipped in two apiece.
The Griffs were led by Ashley Curtis, who set a Canisius record in the victory with eight goals. Brett Poissant added three goals.
Canisius dominated the first half of play by scoring four unanswered goals within less than seven minutes to take the early lead with two of them coming from Curtis. However, the Colonials brought the score within one when Beck, Trombetta and junior Lynette Gomez (Ocean, N.J. / Ocean Township) each scored goals within a six minute span to the set the score at 4-3 with 15:16 left to play.
At 20:55 Poissant scored back-to-back goals and Curtis tallied her third score with 6:23 left on the scoreboard to take back the four goal lead. The Colonials and the Griffins traded scores before the end of the half to bring the score to 8-4 heading into the second half.
Throughout the first 10 minutes of play the two squads swapped points with each team capturing two goals each, but at the 9:36 mark Canisius scored a surge of four goals to give them their biggest lead of the contest at 13-6.
The Colonials scored two more times before the end of the contest with Beck capturing the final goal with 11 seconds left off an assist from Sicinski, but it was not enough as the Griffins topped the Colonials 14-8.
Robert Morris and Canisius were relatively even picking up ground balls with Canisius grabbing 24 and the Colonials tallying 23.
The Colonials return to action on Friday, March 12 when they take on St. Bonaventure at 4:00 p.m.
