Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team concluded play at the Pitt Blue and Gold Tournament Saturday, falling to No. 9 Washington and Bowling Green by identical 3-0 scores inside Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa.
In spite of the losses, junior Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) was recognized for her standout performances by being named to the Blue Gold All-Tournament Team. She collected 36 kills while hitting at least .350 in all four matches and recorded a cumulative mark of .392 for the tournament. Veith also helped lead the Colonial blocking effort by registering 16 blocks during the tournament.
Veith led RMU with team-highs of eight kills and a .389 hitting percentage while tying for the team lead with three blocks in the team's opening match against Washington. Freshman Alex Deines (Centennial, Colo. / Littleton) paced the offensive attack with a team-best 13 assists while senior captain Corinne Moser (Meyersdale, Pa. / Meyersdale) corralled a team-high 13 digs.
The Colonials and Huskies were knotted, 7-7, in game one after back-to-back service aces by RMU senior captain Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie). Washington won the ensuing five points to take a 12-7 lead and maintained its five-point edge through the middle portion of the game. The Huskies still led by five, 19-14, before running off four straight points to push their lead to nine, which proved to be the final margin of game one.
Washington stormed out of the gates in game two, using a 7-1 run to open up an 8-2 advantage. The Colonials fought back and played the top-10 Huskies dead even over the next 18 points as each team claimed nine. With Washington leading 17-11, the Huskies won six consecutive points and went on to finish off the game with a 12-point cushion.
Robert Morris threatened Washington in the third game as the Colonials held the lead past the midway mark. With Washington leading 12-11, senior captain Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton) and sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) put away a kills on consecutive points to give RMU the lead. After an attacking error by the Huskies, Veith and senior Jaye Hellmich (Costa Mesa, Calif. / Estancia) teamed up on a block to give RMU a three-point lead. Washington responded by taking the next six points and claimed a three-point edge of their own, 18-15. The Colonials cut the lead to two, 19-17, but Washington won six of the final nine points to take the match.
In the third game, the Colonials had 3.5 blocks and held the Huskies to just a .132 hitting percentage. That marks the lowest percentage Washington has recorded in a single game this entire season. In fact, dating back to the last season, the Huskies had gone 51 consecutive regular-season games with a hitting percentage better than .132. RMU also outblocked Washington for the match, 5.5-4.
In the team's second match of the day, Graham recorded a team-leading 10 kills on 20 attempts (.300), registering double-digit kills for a team-leading sixth time this season. Veith knocked down nine kills and hit .353 while a pair of Colonials put up impressive hitting percentages.
Senior Addie Jennings (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Dos Pueblos) had five kills on eight attempts without an error to hit .625 while sophomore Amanda Craig (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) notched five kills on 10 attempts without an error to hit .500. Sophomore Andrea Catucci (Davidsonville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) added a team-best 17 assists while Drabant tallied a team-high 11 digs.
Bowling Green used a 4-0 spurt to open up an early 8-4 lead in the match's first game. The Falcons continued to maintain the lead and pushed their edge to five at 16-11. However, the Colonials came right back, claiming five straight points to tie the game. Over the next 12 points, neither team was able to open up a two-point lead and the squads found themselves knotted at 22. The Falcons' Noelle Spitler produced kills on each of the next three points to take the game.
Bowling Green led through most of the early portion of game two and opened a six-point lead at 17-11. After a Colonial timeout, Robert Morris won six of the next nine points to cut the deficit to three, 20-17. Bowling Green would stop the Colonial comeback by taking five of the next seven points to take a two-game lead.
The teams split the first 12 points of the third set, but the Falcons proceeded to win each of the next six to claim a 12-6 lead. The teams played relatively even from that point forward as the Falcons maintained a lead between three and six points for the duration of the game. Bowling Green finished the match with a 25-20 victory.
With the completion of Saturday's matches, the Colonials wrapped up the tournament portion of their schedule. In its 15 matches thus far, RMU has only been outblocked by its opponent once.
After playing non-conference competition in its first 15 matches this season, Robert Morris will open its Northeast Conference (NEC) schedule next weekend while continuing its 13-match road trip. The Colonials will jump right into the thick of things as they take on defending NEC champion Long Island next Saturday, Sept. 25, before facing St. Francis (N.Y.) the following afternoon. Robert Morris will seek to continue its winning ways against NEC foes as the Colonials have a winning record against every conference opponent in their all-time series history.
