Robert Morris Wins an Overtime Thriller at Niagara

NIAGARA, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team won an overtime thriller Friday night at Niagara, 6-5, in Dwyer Arena.  

The Colonials (15-8-3, 10-6-3) picked up their second win of the season in Dwyer Arena against the Purple Eagles (15-8-2, 12-6-0) in a back and forth game which saw two goalie changes and 11 goals following the first intermission. Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice) netted the overtime game-winning goal 14 seconds into the extra frame.

Robert Morris and Niagara played to a scoreless first period with Chris Noonan making 13 saves while Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. /Pembroke Lumber Kings) stopped all 12 shots he faced. Each team had a power play opportunity with both the Colonials and the Purple Eagles earning a penalty kill.

Niagara took the first lead of the game with a goal from Giancaro Iuorio at the 3:09 mark of the second period. Robert Morris tied the game at one as Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) scored his third goal of the season at the 4:51 mark of the second frame. Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) gave the Colonials their first lead of the game at 7:25 mark tallying his second goal of the season. Niagara responded with a goal from Patrick Divjak and Bryan Hazyk to take a 3-2 lead at the 8:26 mark of the second. Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) evened the game at three notching his 14th goal of the season. Following the third goal by Niagara, Robert Morris pulled Levine in favor of Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers), who saw his first game action since Jan. 7.

The Colonials retook the lead in the third period as Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) scored the first two goals of the college career in 1:04. Brooks played the first 31 games of his career without a goal and only picking up two career points. Ryan Rashid cut the lead to one with a goal at the 9:28 mark of the period. Paul Zanette tied the game with a power-play goal with just 1:30 left in regulation.

Robert Morris picked up its second overtime win of the season with Blandina's goal. Ostergard made 23 saves in relief of Levine, while the junior earned his 11th win of the season. The Colonials finished the game 0-of-2 on the power play and 1-of-2 on the penalty kill.     

The Colonials and the Purple Eagles return to action Saturday night at the Islands Sports Center with puck drop set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on RMUColonials.com and Pittsburgh Penguins HD radio.

Game Notes

- The overtime win for the Colonials is their second of the season.

- Robert Morris tied the school record for wins in a single season Friday with its 15th win of the season.    

- Nathan Longpre extended his point streak to six games Saturday. The senior assistant captain has a point in 13 of his last 14 games with six multi-point games during the streak.

- Colin South extended his point streak to three games after missing his RMU's last two games due to injury.

- The six goals for Robert Morris match a season high for goals in a game. The Colonials had just seven goals in their previous eight periods.

- Denny Urban posted his second consecutive multi-point game Friday. The senior assistant captain has post 21 points in his last 18 games.
