Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team captured the second set to even its match with Central Connecticut State, but the Colonials were unable to keep the momentum going and fell in four games to the Blue Devils in Northeast Conference (NEC) play Sunday afternoon at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Junior outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) aided the Robert Morris effort in multiple areas, collecting a match-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs, to become the first Colonial since 2005 to collect double-doubles in five consecutive matches. Her effort marked her team-leading 10th double-double of the 2011 season and the 18th of her career as she has now reached double-digit kills in at least five consecutive matches for the second time this season.
Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) helped lead RMU offensively by drilling 14 kills on just 28 attempts to hit a team-high .429. She has now hit at least .400 six times in a seven-match span for just the second time in her career and first since her freshman campaign. Veith, who tallied five blocks Sunday, has also reached double-digit kills in three consecutive matches for the third time this season and has hit double figures in 13 of her past 17 matches overall.
Freshman Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) led the defensive corps for the Colonials by corralling a team season-high 28 digs, including an even 10 in the second set alone. She became the first Colonial since 2008 to have a dig total that high in a match that did not last five sets.
Freshman Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) helped coordinate the Colonial attack by tallying 46 assists in the four-setter. Hoffman has hit the 40-assist plateau in each of the past three matches, the first such instance by a Colonial since 2007.
Robert Morris jumped out quickly in the opener, taking five of the first six points, but the Blue Devils soon fought back and evened the set at 9-9. With the squads still tied six points later, Central Connecticut utilized a 6-2 run to open up its biggest lead of the set, 18-14. RMU attempted to come back and was able to cut the deficit to two points on three occasions, but Central Connecticut was able to finish the first set, 25-21, by winning back-to-back points.
After the teams evenly divided the first 18 points of the second set, Robert Morris went on a 6-1 run, courtesy of three Monger kills and two kills and a block from Veith, to open up a 15-10 edge. The Colonials led by at least four points for the rest of the way and extended their lead to the final margin of eight near the close of the set.
The Blue Devils broke open the third set in the early going as Central Connecticut won seven straight exchanges after the teams split the first six points. The visitors continued to expand their lead until the final portions of the game when RMU began to dig in to the advantage. Nonetheless, RMU's deficit proved to be too great to pull even as RMU fell 25-17 in the third set.
The fourth set was to be the tightest of the bunch as neither side was able to pull away in the early going. The Blue Devils appeared to be on the verge of doing so when they took a 13-9 edge, but the Colonials fought back, using a 7-3 spurt to even the game. The teams were tied at 16, 17, 18 and 19, but Central Connecticut found an extra gear and finished the set by claiming six of the final nine points to complete the match.
Junior opposite hitter Amanda Craig's (Houston, Texas / St. Agnes Academy) led Robert Morris with a season-high and team-best seven blocks while contributing nine kills and five digs.
A pair of rookies, Sydney Sizemore (Covington, Ky. / Holy Cross) and Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan), both tied their career highs in kills with nine and six, respectively, while the latter added five blocks and two aces.
Robert Morris will get to take a breath from league play when it plays its final non-conference match of the season this Wednesday, Oct. 12. The Colonials welcome local rival Pittsburgh to the Sewall Center for a 7:00 p.m. match.
