OMAHA, Neb. - Oct. 7, 2011 -An early goal from senior captain Trevor Lewis wouldn't be enough for the Robert Morris men's hockey team as the Colonials fell 3-1 to Colgate in the opening contest of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Friday night. The loss drops Robert Morris to 4-4-0 all-time in season openers.
After the Raiders drew a penalty less than three minutes into the game, Lewis (Lilitz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) didn't wait long to notch the first goal of his senior campaign; scoring on Robert Morris' first scoring attempt of the night and putting the Colonials up 1-0 just 3:59 into Friday's contest. Senior forward Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) set up the power-play goal and was credited with an assist. The Colonials (0-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Atlantic Hockey) would go 1-for-4 on the power play on Friday night while Colgate would be shutout on its three advantages.
But the Raiders (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) would then fire off three-unanswered goals to respond. And Colgate didn't wait long to answer Lewis' early goal. Robbie Bourdon would slip a shot past senior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) at 18:46 of the first to even the score at 1-1 with an assist from John Lidgett. Kurtis Batliff would pocket the eventual game winner, with assists from both Lidgett and Bourdon, at 6:17 in the second, and Joe Wilson would add an insurance goal at 8:15 of the third to round out the scoring summary. Austin Smith and Mike McCann would be credited with assists on Wilson's one-timer goal.
The Colonials would pull Ostergard in favor of the extra attacker with just under two minutes remaining, but the added threat was not enough as Robert Morris couldn't beat Raiders goalie Alex Evin a second time on Friday night. Ostergard would make 17 saves in the losing effort while allowing three goals while Evin gave up one goal and made 16 saves to pick up the win.
Robert Morris continues the 2011-12 season on Saturday in the consolation game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede. The Colonials will take on Merchyhurst at 5:07 p.m. ET to close out the tournament.
