ERIE, Pa. – Nov. 11, 2011 – Robert Morris senior forward Nick Chiavetta notched three points and freshman forward Scott Jacklin tallied a pair including his first career goal for the eventual game winner as the Colonial men's hockey team topped Mercyhurst 4-3 in Atlantic Hockey action on Friday night. The Colonials moved to 2-0-0 against the Lakers with the win and snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lakers.
After going down 1-0 early in the first period, the Colonials (4-6-0 overall, 2-2-0 Atlantic Hockey) rallied with a four-goal hot streak in the second as nine different Colonials would tally points in the period. Chiavetta (Harrisburg, Pa. / New York Applecore) tallied his first goal of the season at 3:59 when the senior knocked in a rebound to make it an even game with assists from junior defenseman Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners) and sophomore defenseman Evan Renwick (Calgary, Alberta / Canmore Eagles).
Chiavetta, who was held without a goal for the first nine games of the season, would strike again in the second, giving the Colonials their first lead of the night at 9:34. Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) and fellow freshman forward Cody Cartier (Sylvan Lake, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) notched assists on the goal. Chiavetta's goal would be the first of three RMU scores in a span of 2:40. Senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) would tally his first goal of the season when he tipped in a shot by senior forward Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) at 10:43. Freshman forward Cody Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) would also earn an assist on the goal.
Jacklin, who hit the crossbar earlier in the period, would break through for his first career goal at 12:14 for the eventual game winner. The newcomer, who ended the night with his first two points with Robert Morris, was set up by junior defenseman Tyler Hinds (Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders) and Chiavetta, who factored into three of the Colonials' four goals on the night. Robert Morris would outshoot the Lakers 42-33 in the win including a 21-10 showing in the second period.
Mercyhurst (4-5-0, 3-1-0) would rally with a pair of goals in the third period, but could not keep senior goalkeeper Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) from picking up his first win of the season. The senior netminder made 30 saves and improved to 1-4-0 on the season. Mercyhurst's Max Strang made 38 saves in the losing effort.
Robert Morris heads into a bye week before hosting Army at Clearview Arena on Thanksgiving weekend.
