Pittsburgh, Pa. – Nov. 25, 2011 – Nine
Colonials recorded points including five multi-point performances as the Robert
Morris men's hockey team topped Army 5-2 on Friday night to give the Colonials
program its first-ever win over the service academy.
“I
think we played a complete hockey game. From the start of the game, we played
with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm,” Colonials head coach Derek Schooley said. “The win was a great way to open the weekend, now we have to
come back tomorrow night and keep it going.”
In
just the third-ever meeting between the two teams, Robert Morris (5-6-0
overall, 3-2-0 Atlantic Hockey) gave itself its first multi-game winning streak
of the season behind two-point nights from senior forward Nick Chiavetta
(Harrisburg, Pa. / New York Applecore), freshman forward Cody Wydo (Allen Park,
Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets), senior defenseman Josh Jones (Scenery Hill,
Pa. / Hawkesbury Hawks), senior forward Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay
State Breakers) and freshman forward Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia
/ Trail Smoke Eaters).
The
nation's best penalty kill continued to blank opponents' power-play units –
adding a 4-for-4 performance on the penalty kill tonight against the Black
Knights. Robert Morris has now successfully killed 46-of-48 penalties this
season and has shut out its opponents in 10-of-11 games this season.
After
a three-point performance two weeks ago against Mercyhurst, Chiavetta continued
his hot streak with a pair of points in Friday's win. The forward put the
Colonials up 1-0 at 9:23 of the first period with his third goal of the year
with an assist from Jacklin and then added an assist on Jacklin's goal in the
second. After being held to one point in the first nine games of the season,
Chiavetta has tallied five points in the last two games.
After
Mac Lalor tied the game for Army at 10:38, RMU freshman forward Cody Cartier
(Sylvan Lake, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) snapped RMU's four game power-play
drought with his second goal of the season at 18:49 of the first period South tallied
his first of two assists on the goal while sophomore defenseman Jimmy Geerin
(Anchorage, Alaska / Burnaby Express) also was credited with a helper as Robert
Morris went 1-for-3 on the power play.
For
the second game in a row, Robert Morris would come back from the first
intermission strong – this time tallying three second period goals to go along
with the four the Colonials scored two weeks ago in Erie. The Colonials picked
up the eventual game winner off the stick of Wydo. After the Colonials successfully
killed Wydo's penalty for elbowing, the newcomer sprang from the box and
quickly deposited his second goal of the year after being set up by Chiavetta
and Jones at 11:04 of the second.
Army
(1-6-4, 1-4-2) would cut the lead to one from Mike Hull at 12:33, but Robert
Morris would put two more in the net before the end of the second stanza.
Jacklin deflected the puck over the goal line at 13:49 of the second for his
second goal of the year. South and junior defenseman Brendan Jamison
(Pittsburgh, Pa. / Jersey Hitmen) earned assists on the goal. The Colonials
would close out the night when senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario
/ Brampton Capitals) scored his second goal of the year at 14:56 with assists
from Wydo and Jones.
In
net, senior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State
Breakers) tallied his second-straight win for the Colonials, making 36 saves.
With the win, Ostergard improves to 2-4-0 on the season. Ryan Leets took the
loss for Army, making 28 saves.
