PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team earned a decisive, 5-3, win against RIT Saturday in front of a record crowd at the Island Sports Center, ending the nation's longest unbeaten streak.
The Colonials (18-9-5, 13-7-5) scored three times in the first period and never looked back against the Tigers (16-9-7, 15-4-6) who enter the night with an NCAA best 11-game unbeaten streak. Five different Colonials found the net against RIT's Shane Madolora, who entered the game with the NCAA leader in goals-against average, save percentage and undefeated. Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) scored his second game-winning goal of the season as RMU scored five goals in the first two periods. Â
Robert Morris and RIT felt each other out early in the first period but it was the Colonials who would strike first. Following a delay in action due to an injury to official, Zach Hervato (Stittsville, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) won a faceoff on the right hand side of Madolora back to Brock Meadows (White Rock, B.C. / Salmon Arm Silverbacks). The senior assistant captain fired a shot on net that was tipped in the slot by Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) to give RMU the early advantage at the 14:15 mark of the first period. The Colonials pushed the advantage to two when Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) netted his seventh goal of the season at the 17:11 mark of the first frame knocking home a rebound on a shot by Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars). Less than a minute later, Hervato extended the lead to three with sixth goal of the season.
RIT responded in the second period with a goal from Bryan Potts, who scored back door on an excellent pass by Tyler Brenner. Robert Morris pushed the advantage back to three when Brace netted his 12th goal of the season to extend his point streak to eight games. Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) sent the Island Sports Center record crowd of 1,229 into a frenzy when he scored a power-play goal at the 13:03 mark of the second to push the lead to 5-1. RIT was able to cut into the lead with a power-play goal from Chris Saracino in the final minute of the second stanza.
RIT scored the only goal of the third period as Bryan Potts netted his second goal of the game and just the third of this career to finish off the scoring. Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) stopped 33 shots over the final two periods as the Colonials picked a critical Atlantic Hockey Association win.
Robert Morris posted a mark of 1-for-5 on the power play and a tallied seven penalty kills in eight chances Saturday night. Ostergard stopped 11 shots on the penalty kill as the Colonials have now killed off 24 of the last 26 opposing team's power plays.
The Colonials head west next weekend in their final series of the regular season against Air Force Feb. 25-26.
