Urban and Longpre Earn First Team All-Conference Honors

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Atlantic Hockey Association named its yearly awards Thursday with the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team picking up several honors.

"I am very proud of these guys and the honors they are receiving," head men's ice hockey coach Derek Schooley said. "This is a great reflection on the season our team had in setting our all time wins record and best record in program history.  We will miss the players that are graduating but we feel like we have a good group of players returning as well as incoming to Robert Morris."

Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) walked away with the most hardware among the Colonials earning first team all-conference honors and picking up the AHA's Defenseman of the Year Award. Urban, an All-American Candidate ranked first on the team in blocks, second on the Colonials this season in points and set school records in assists in a single season, plus/minus and points in the single season by a defenseman. He ranked first in AHA in assists, eighth in the conference in points, seventh in plus/minus and led all league defenseman in points.

Urban posted 32 of his 40 points in conference play and dished out 27 of his 32 assists in Atlantic Hockey action. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native ranks second in the nation in points per game among defenseman and became just the third Colonial ever to reach 100 career points and the first defenseman.

Urban's 40 points ranks as the fourth best by a defenseman in the past five years of NCAA Division I Hockey and his points per game mark of 1.14 is second best in past the five years among defenseman. He ranks second in NCAA Division I among active defenseman in career points. The Colonials assistant captain ranks tied for 29th nationally in points per game.

"Denny had an unbelievable senior season," Schooley said. "He had a great season not only offensively but defensively.  He has been consistently in the top two in scoring by defenseman nationally and in the Top 10 overall in Atlantic Hockey in plus/minus.  He had a year that will be tough to be duplicated by a defenseman in any league. I am very proud of the development Denny has made in his college career."

Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) joined Urban on the conference's first team after putting together a great season in which he led the Colonials in points guiding RMU to a program record 18 wins. The senior assistant captain finished the season ranked 18th nationally in points per game. The Peterborough, Ontario, native ranked 11th nationally in assists per game, 17th nationally in game winning goals and tied for fourth overall in Atlantic Hockey in total points. Of his four game winning goals in 2010-11, he scored three against conference rivals and totaled three game-winners on his home ice to lead RMU to the best home record in the conference.

Longpre became the second Robert Morris Colonial to reach 100 career points earlier in the season against Air Force. He ranks as one of the Top 3 active Atlantic Hockey skaters in career points. His 42 points this season were the fourth most in a single season by a Colonial. Longpre also posted the second longest point streak in school history earlier this season earning a point in nine consecutive games.

"Nathan will go down as one of the top offensive players ever to play at Robert Morris," Schooley said. "As our all time leading scorer, he had a senior season that produced career bests in points and goals.  He is a very good offensive player that uses his speed and body well to create space in getting to the net.   His overall game got better as he got older and is a very responsible player in both ends of the rink."

Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) earned the Individual Sportsmanship Award in the conference as Atlantic Hockey's top sportsman. The junior forward had a career season scoring the puck for the Colonials finding the net seven times after just three goals in his previous two seasons. The Sewickley, Pa., native played in all 35 games for the Colonials and picked up just one penalty during the 2010-11 campaign and never once saw time in the penalty box during an Atlantic Hockey league game. The junior returns to the Colonials next season with 95 games of experience in the Blue and White with Red.

This season, South played all 35 games on the same line as the right wing pair with Nick Chiavetta (Harrisburg, Pa. / New York Applecore) and Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice). The junior also leads RMU in the classroom with a 3.90 grade point average.

"This is great honor for a player that doesn't receive a tremendous amount of accolades," Schooley said.  "Furman is a player who plays the game the right way.  He plays hard, finishes his checks, competes hard defensively and throws his body in front of pucks all while playing the game without taking penalties.  To play in all the AHA games the way he does and not get a single penalty is why he is the AHA Sportsman on the Year."

Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) earned All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team honors for his great performance between the pipes for the Colonials and recording the second most wins by an RMU netminder in a single season. The junior goalie finished third in the conference in goals-against average, fourth in save percentage and fourth in winning percentage. Ostergard put together several great performances in net stopping 40 or more shots twice and not suffering a regulation conference loss until Nov. 19. Ostergard also got involved offensively for Robert Morris as well passing out two assists for the Colonials. The junior returns to the Robert Morris roster next season holding the RMU record for career goals-against average with a mark of 2.86.

"Brooks was a rock for us all season long," Schooley said. "He is a big athletic goalie that was consistent all year.  He was a big part of our success this season. He was one of the reasons our team goals against average improved and our penalty killing took a giant step this season.  We are looking forward to him coming back next year and duplicating this season."
