Robert Morris Rally Falls Short Against St. Bonaventure

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse fell in its third home game of the season Friday against St. Bonaventure, 13-8.

The Colonials (1-5, 0-0) picked up two second half free position goals from Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) to pull within one of the Bonnies (2-2, 0-0) but that would be as close as Robert Morris would get as they fell for the fifth consecutive contest. Cara Hernandez (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) led the Colonials offensively with four points as the freshman picked up her second hat trick of the season.   

Robert Morris took an early lead against St. Bonaventure as Hernandez netted her first goal of the game 39 seconds into the contest with Elizabeth Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) earning the assist. Trombetta pushed the early Colonial lead to two with 38 seconds after Hernandez's goal. The Bonnies cut the lead in half with a goal from Christine Hanley. Hernandez pushed the Robert Morris lead back to two at the 20:16 mark of the first half with her second goal of the game. The Bonnies' offense awoke following the second goal by Hernandez, as St. Bonaventure netted five consecutive goals from five different players to take a 6-3 lead. Hernandez ended the Bonnies run with her third goal of the half at the 3:06 mark of the half. St. Bonaventure responded with a pair of goals but Robert Morris closed the first half with a goal from Emily VanDyne (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) to head into the break trailing 8-5.

Trombetta started the second half with her two free position goals getting the St. Bonaventure lead down to just one at the 26:01 mark of the second half. The Bonnies responded with five consecutive goals with two coming from Danielle Darbin. Sunseri closed scoring in the contest with a goal with 2:05 remaining in the game.

Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) posted six saves in net and caused three turnovers. Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. /St. Mary's Academy) posted a solid defensive effort causing six turnovers and picking up three ground balls. Robert Morris picked up 20 ground balls and went 17-of-23 on clear attempts.
