Canisius Slips Past Robert Morris

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse took an early lead but could not hold on against Canisius, who picked up the win, 11-10.

The Colonials (1-6, 0-0) got off to a fast start posting six first half goals but a late 5-1 goal run for the Golden Griffins (4-3, 0-0) sent the Colonials to their sixth consecutive defeat. Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) led Robert Morris offensively with a three goals with two coming on free position shots.

Canisius grabbed the early lead with a pair of goals free position goals to give the Golden Griffins a two goal advantage at the 19:04 mark of the first half. Robert Morris responded with five unanswered goals and a 6-1 goal run to end the half.

Trombetta started the run with a goal off a free position shot at the 17:35 mark of the first half. Rachel Engel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) tied the game at two with her fourth goal of the season with 16:47 remaining in the first frame. MacKenzie Lawler (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) gave Robert Morris its first lead of the game with a goal at the 16:03 mark with Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. /St. Mary's Academy) earning the assist on the play. Trombetta netted her second goal of the game with 13:38 left in the half and Emily VanDyne (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) complete the five goal run with her fourth goal of the season at the 10:28 mark of the first half.

Maria Kotas netted the third goal of the half for Canisius with 7:27 reaming till halftime to cut the Colonial lead to 5-3. Trombetta scored her third goal of the half with 34 second left in the frame to send Robert Morris to the intermission with a 6-3 advantage.

O'Donnell opened the second half scoring with her sixth goal of the season at the 25:32 mark of the second half. Canisius then cut into the Colonial lead with a pair of goals, one from Carly Quinn and the second from Megan Oosting. Engel pushed the Colonial advantage to 8-5 at 17:01 of the second stanza with her second goal of the game and fifth of the season.

The Golden Griffins would not go away and Kate Gosson scored with 14:48 left in regulation to narrow the Robert Morris lead to 8-6. Lawler responded with a goal off a free position shot 40 seconds later to renew the Colonials three goal lead. Canisius then shook loose and scored four unanswered goals to take a 10-9 lead with 6:50 to play in regulation.

O'Donnell tied the game with a great play in which she forced a turnover near midfield to stop a Canisius clear attempt she then ran the length of the field and scored her second goal for the second stanza to tied the game at 10.

Theresa Walton put RMU back in a hole with second goal of the game at the 4:37 mark of the second half and the Colonials could not recover. With less than a minute remaining, Robert Morris appeared to force a turnover near the Golden Griffin goal but the Colonials were called for just then second foul of the half and fell to the Griffins.      

Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) posted five saves in net while O'Donnell, who entered the game leading the nation in caused turnovers, posted another solid defensive effort causing four turnovers and picking up four ground balls. Robert Morris created solid offensive pressure winning the shot battle 30-20 and also posted a perfect day on free-position shots going 4-for-4.

Robert Morris returns to action at 3:00 p.m. Friday as the Colonials travel to Sacred Heart in Fairfield Conn. to open up Northeast Conference play against the Pioneers.
