Robert Morris Wins NEC Opener in Overtime Thriller

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team ended a six game skid knocking off Sacred Heart, 11-10, in overtime in the Colonials Northeast Conference opener.

The Colonials (2-6, 1-0) got a goal from Elizabeth Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) with just 47 seconds left in regulation to force overtime against the Pioneers (1-7, 0-1) and the Colonials won the back and forth game it in the extra period. Emily VanDyne (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas), who assisted on Sunseri's game-tying goal in regulation, scored the only goal of the extra period as Robert Morris picked up the victory.

Robert Morris jumped out to an early lead as Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. /St. Mary's Academy) scored and assisted on a goal in the first 2:34 of the contest to give RMU a 2-0 advantage. Sacred Heart fought back with a goal from Kaitlin Rochler and another from Shelby Vaccaro to even the game at two.

O'Donnell broke the stalemate at the 22:38 mark of the first half with her second goal of game. Rachel Engel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) pushed the Colonial lead back to two with her sixth goal of the season at 21:34 mark. Sacred Heart battled back with a short three goal run to give the Pioneers, their first lead of the game.

Emily Pepe scored at the 20:03 mark and then assisted on two Kate Kmiotek goals as Sacred Heart took 5-4 lead. Sunseri tied the game at five at the 12:53 mark on a free position shot. Kelsey Russo looked like she may have netted the final tally of the first half with 2:30 remaining on a free position shot but Robert Morris closed the half with a pair of goals in the final 1:30.

O'Donnell netted her 10th goal of the season with 1:28 remaining before halftime off an assist from Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century). VanDyne sent the Colonials to the intermission with a lead by netting her ninth goal of the season with just nine seconds left on the clock. Engel picked up the assist on the goal as Robert Morris took at 7-6 lead into halftime.

Jessica Ingrilli tied the game for Sacred Heart at seven with her 10th goal of the season at the 23:13 mark of the second half. Trombetta placed Robert Morris back in the lead and stayed perfect on free position shots netting her 10th goal of the season at the 16:34 mark of the second half. The senior tri-captain is now 5-of-5 on the season of free position shots this season.

Alyssa Dorsey tied the game at eight for the Pioneers at the 15:04 mark of the second stanza and Pepe gave Sacred Heart the Lead with her second goal of the game at 12:56 mark of the second half. O'Donnell tied the game at nine with her fourth goal of the game at the 10:33 mark of the second half but Sacred Heart retook the lead less than a minute later when Ingrilli found the net for the second time in the second half.

Following the five goals in less than seven minutes both team offenses stalled. It appeared that Robert Morris would fall by a one goal margin of the second consecutive game until Sunseri tied the game off the feed from VanDyne with just 47 seconds left. Robert Morris then had a chance to win the game in regulation on a free position shot for O'Donnell but the attempt went wide.

In the six minute extra frame VanDyne scored 2:43 into the overtime to give Robert Morris a lead they would not relinquish. Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) stopped the two shots in overtime including a Pioneer attempt at the buzzer to secure the win for the Colonials.

For the game, Pentz tied a season high with 10 saves. For the second consecutive contest, Robert Morris created solid pressure in front of the net an outshot its opponent. The Colonials also bested the Pioneers on the draw picking up 15 draw controls, including seven by Sunseri.

Robert Morris concludes its Connecticut road trip at noon Sunday against Northeast Conference foe Quinnipiac.
