Robert Morris Edged by Central Connecticut State

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team fell to Northeast Conference rival Central Connecticut State, 10-9, Friday at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Colonials (2-8, 1-2 NEC) suffered their second consecutive one-goal loss at home Friday as the Blue Devils (6-5, 1-3 NEC) netted a goal with 34 seconds left in regulation to pick up the win. Central Connecticut State scored four of the final five goals in the game to sneak past Robert Morris for the win. Rachel Engel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) led the Colonials offensively with a goal and four assists.

Emily VanDyne (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) gave Robert Morris the early lead in the game with a goal 2:27 into the contest off of an assist by Engel. The Blue Devils battled back with a pair of goal by Mackenzy Ryan and CCSU took a 2-1 lead at 21:32 of the first half. Engel tied the game at two with 15:54 left in the half with Kaleigh Gibbons (Candia, N.H. / Manchester Central) earning the assist.

Meaghan McCurry scored her first goal of the afternoon at the 13:41 mark of the first half off of an assist from Ashley Perkoski to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 advantage. Robert Morris responded quickly with a goal by MacKenzie Lawler (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) 12 seconds later to even the game at three a complete the scoring in a first half dominated by defense.

Elizabeth Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) gave the Colonials the lead after the intermission with her first goal of the afternoon 2:59 seconds into the second half. Central Connecticut State responded with back-to-back goals the first from Lyndsey Mastandrea and the second from McCurry give the Blue Devils a 5-4 advantage.

Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) timed the game at five at 21:02 of the second half as Gibbons picked up her second assist of the afternoon. The goal by O'Donnell sparked a 4-1 goal run over the nest 2:28 for Robert Morris with two tallies coming Sunseri and one from VanDyne. Betsy Vendel netted the only goal for the Blue Devils during the span but at 17:34 Robert Morris held an 8-6 advantage.

Central Connecticut State responded to the Colonials run with three unanswered goals giving the Blue Devils a 9-8 lead with 13:35 reaming in regulation. The pace of the game slowed down but O'Donnell was able to break through and tie the game with 5:51 remaining netting her second goal of the afternoon while Engel earned her fourth assist.

The Blue Devils held on to possession late in the second half and Vendel score with just with just 34 seconds remaining on the clock. The Colonials won the ensuing draw control but were unable to get a shot on net before time expired.

Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) stopped seven shots in net for the Colonials but the freshman's solid performance was overshadowed by a dominate performance by CCSU goalie Erin Delancey. Delancey stopped 17 shots, which ranks in the top 15 in single game totals in the nation this season.

Robert Morris returns to action at noon Sunday against Northeast Conference foe Bryant at Joe Walton Stadium.
