Men?s Hockey Names 2010-11 Team Awards

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team recently named its team awards with Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) earning the team's Most Valuable Player and Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) picking up Offensive Player of the Year.

Urban earned the Robert Morris team honor as the squad's Most Valuable Player while also picking up Defenseman of the Year. Urban posted one of the best overall seasons ever by a Robert Morris defenseman. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native passed out a school record 32 assists, set a school record in plus/minus with a +14, while breaking his own school record for points in a season by a defenseman with 40. Urban earned Atlantic Hockey Defenseman of the Year honors while also being named to the All-AHA First Team. He ranked as one of three defensemen in the nation to rack up 40 points while ranking second in the nation in points per game by a defenseman. Urban finished his Robert Morris career third in RMU history in total points and sits as the only Colonial defenseman ever to reach 100 career points.

Longpre earned Offensive Player of the Year honors after leading the Colonials in points with 42 and finished 17th nationally in points per game. The Peterborough, Ontario native posted the fourth highest single season point total in school history. Longpre netted 14 goals with four on the power play and four game-winning goals. He earned first-team All-Atlantic Hockey honors while leading Robert Morris to single season school records in plus minus and wins. Longpre finished his Robert Morris career with a Colonial record 138 career points, second in career goals and with the school record in career assists with 91. Urban and Longpre also finished their careers tied for the most games played in the Blue and White with Red.

Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) picked up the Robert Morris team honor for Rookie of the Year after posting five goals while passing out five assists. Colin South led all Colonials in games played, assists, points and goals. The Colonial rookie forward netted his first goal of the season against American International in RMU's second game of the season. The Sewickley, Pa. native picked up the first assist of his college career on Oct. 30 at Niagara. Colin South netted the game-winning goal against Sacred Heart. He battled through injuries and at one point in the season played with a separated shoulder while dealing with food poisoning. The rookie also found his way on to the Colonial power-play unit and scored two power-play goals.

Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) earned the Colonial Student-Athlete of the year award after posting a great year on and off the ice. The junior scored a career high seven goals while passing out four assists to total 11 points on the season. Furman South played in all 35 games with the Colonials scoring twice on the power-play with a laser one timer from the right side faceoff circle. The Sewickley, Pa. native also became know on the ice for his incredible sportsmanship. At the end of the season, the Atlantic Hockey Association named Furman South Individual Sportsman of the Year in the conference as Atlantic Hockey's top sportsman. In the classroom, the forward boasts the best cumulative grade point average on the team.  

Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Orleans Blues) earned the team's most inspirational award for the second consecutive season and served as the team's captain during the 2010-11 season. Kushneriuk missed several games due to an injury but return for the final six games and scored the game-winning goal in his first back to give RMU a 3-2 win against instate conference rival Mercyhurst. The senior totaled 29 games in his final season with seven goals and 13 assists.

Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) took away the team's most improved award after registering four goals and two assists in 13 games the past season. The junior forward stepped up during a stretch late in the season in which several players were sidelined with injury. Brooks 2010-11 season was highlighted by a two goal game at Niagara on Jan. 28 in which the St. Louis, Mo. native scored twice in span of 1:04 to give RMU at two goal advantage. Brooks added a goal against RIT and at Air Force while also passing out two assists. Good things happened with Brooks on the ice as the junior posted a plus/minus rating of +8 while recording a minus in only two of his 13 games.
