Box Score Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team recorded its highest hitting percentage in a match away from home since 2004, improving to 2-0 in league play with ease, as the Colonials bounced St. Francis (N.Y.), 25-20, 25-21, 25-7, in Northeast Conference (NEC) action Sunday afternoon at the Genovesi Center.
The Colonials hit a striking .389 as a team as they pounded down 45 kills on 95 attempts, collecting their highest kill and assist totals in a three-set match in over two years. RMU's final-set, 18-point margin of victory was also its largest since the NCAA made the change from 30 points being necessary to win a game. Somewhat ironically, the Terriers also had 95 attack attempts on the afternoon, but the Colonials held the hosts to just 25 kills on those swings.
"I'm pleased to start off the conference slate with two road wins," head coach Dale Starr said. "Our offense was highly efficient today, and we'll look to carry that over into our upcoming matches this week, starting Wednesday."
Junior outside hitter Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season on the strength of a match-high 13 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Monger's 13 kills came on just 23 attempts, helping her hit a season-best .435, as she reached double figures for the ninth time in both the kill and dig departments.
Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) hit at least .500 for a third-consecutive match for the second time in her career. She pounded down 12 kills without committing an error to tally double-digit kills for the 10th time in 13 matches. Veith, who also registered a match-high three blocks, has a combined 37 kills in her past three matches while making just three errors.
Freshman outside hitter Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) aided Monger and Veith offensively by tallying 11 kills on the afternoon as she notched back-to-back double-digit kill performances for the second time this season.
Robert Morris also got a spark from its service game as it recorded 14 aces, its most in over three years. The Colonial effort was led by junior outside hitter Una Japundza (Rovinj, Croatia / Zvane Crnja) who finished with a career-high and match-high six.
With Robert Morris trailing early in the opening set, 4-2, the Colonials used a decisive 14-4 run to take control, opening up an eight-point lead. RMU had five different student-athletes record kills during the stretch and two additional Colonials each had an ace during the streak. Robert Morris still led by eight at 21-13 before the Terriers tried to fight their way back. St. Francis cut the margin to three at 22-19, but Robert Morris refused to let it get closer as it won three of the final four points to claim the game.
The squads split the first six points of the second set before RMU used a 7-2 spurt, featuring four kills and an ace by Monger, to open up a 10-5 lead. St. Francis would cut the lead to two points twice, but RMU extended it to as many as seven and never trailed in holding on to the victory.
Robert Morris claimed the first point of the final set and never looked back as it led throughout. With the Colonials already holding an 8-4 advantage, they proceeded to end the match in style by going on an incredible 17-3 run to clinch the win.
Freshman setter Hannah Hoffman (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) directed RMU's potent offense by collecting a match-high 38 assists, the most by a Colonial in a sweep since 2008. The rookie, who has reached at least 38 helpers in three straight matches, also posted seven digs and four kills on eight attempts without an error.
Veith's 12 kills tied for her most all-time in a match in which she did not commit a hitting error.
Robert Morris has now won five of its last six overall matches, including three straight on the road, and 17 of its past 20 NEC matches.
RMU improved to a remarkable 25-1 all-time against the Terriers and has started conference play 2-0 for the fourth-consecutive season.
Robert Morris will now return home for a season-long five-match homestand. The Colonials open the stretch this Wednesday, Sept. 28, against in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.). First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
