Top Story - The Robert Morris University men's basketball team returns to the Charles L. Sewall Center for a two-game homestand Thursday night looking to extend its winning streak to a season-high four games with a 7:00 p.m. tip against LIU Brooklyn. The Colonials are coming off an 81-73 overtime victory @ Monmouth (1/12/12) in which redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led RMU with 35 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-11 from long range, and a 9-for-14 performance at the free-throw line. Jones also added six assists and three steals in the victory. Sophomore guard Anthony Myers came off the bench and scored all of his career-high 16 points in the second half and overtime as Robert Morris climbed out of a 15-point deficit in the second half, the biggest comeback for the Colonials under second-year head coach Andrew Toole. The Colonials close out their homestand after hosting the Blackbirds Thursday by entertaing St. Francis (N.Y.) Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m.
Quick Stat of the Night - Despite suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in nearly a year earlier this month, January has been extremely kind to Robert Morris over the last five years. The Colonials enter Thursday's game against Long Island with a record of 5-2 (.714) so far this month, and dating back to the 2007-08 campaign, RMU owns a record of 36-8 (.818) during the month of January. So far this month the Colonials have been led by redshirt junior guard Velton Jones, who is averaging 19.0 points and 4.9 assists per game. Overall, Robert Morris is averaging 71.6 points per game since the calendar has switched to 2012 while shoting 43.3 percent (167-for-386) from the floor, including 38.1 percent (51-for-134) from long range.
Thursday's Opponent and The All-Time Series - LIU Brooklyn and Robert Morris meet for the 64th time on the hardwood Thursday night, with the Colonials holding a 36-27 (.571) edge in the all-time series. The two programs met three times during the 2010-11 campaign, splitting the season series in the regular season before the Blackbirds earned an 85-82 overtime victory over RMU in the championship game of the 2011 Northeast Conference Tournament. In five career games against LIU Brooklyn, redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has averaged 17.0 points and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 47.6 percent (30-for-63) from the field. Three times in his five games against the Blackbirds Jones has eclipsed the 20-point plateau.
Exclusive Club - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones joined a pair of exclusive clubs in an 81-73 overtime victory @ Monmouth (1/21/12). In addition to becoming the 20th member of the RMU 1,000-point club thanks to a three-pointer at the 11:56 mark of the first half, Jones became just the third player in school history to eclipse the 35-point plateau twice in his career. Jones finished with a game-high 35 points in the win over the Hawks, three points shy of his career high of 38 points, which came in an 82-77 win @ James Madison (11/22/11). Jones joins former Colonials Gene Nabors (1995-2000) and Maurice Carter (2001-05) to turn the trick. Nabors finished with 38 and 35 points, respectively, in back-to-back games of the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament, while Carter finished with 42 points, the RMU single-game record, @ Eastern Michigan (11/26/02) and 35 points in a 71-62 win over Sacred Heart (2/5/04).
Ant Marching - Sophomore guard Anthony Myers scored a career-high 16 points in an 81-73 victory @ Monmouth (1/21/12), producing a perfect night shooting. Myers finished 5-for-5 from the field, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Myers, who is averaging 6.6 points per game in the month of January while shooting 48.3 percent (14-for-29) from the field, including 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from long range, is the first Colonial to produce a perfect shooting night since former Colonial Gary Wallace (2007-11) scored 15 points in a 104-56 win over Wagner (1/17/09). Wallace was also 5-for-5 shooting from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, and a perfect 2-for-2 at the chalk.
Lucky Charms - Lucky Jones has blossomed in the last three games since being inserted into the starting lineup, as the freshman forward is averaging 9.3 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the field and 85.7 percent (6-for-7) at the free-throw line. Over the last three games Jones has tied a career high in points (16) and established a new personal best in rebounds (14). Jones has also proven to be an adept free-throw shooter in his first season at Robert Morris. On the 2011-12 campaign he owns a conversion rate of 84.1 percent (58-for-69) at the chalk, which ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference. Jones converted 19 straight at the free-throw line before missing the front end of a one-on-one situation @ Monmouth (1/21/12) and in his last 11 contests is shooting 92.5 percent (37-for-40) at the free-throw line. In addition, RMU is 10-2 (.833) when Jones grabs at least six rebounds in a game.
