Late Goal Lifts Bentley Over RMU

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Jan. 6, 2012 A goal in the closing seconds of Friday's matchup carried Bentley to a 2-1 win over the Robert Morris men's hockey team, snapping the Colonials eight-game Atlantic Hockey Association unbeaten streak.

After over 30 minutes of scoreless hockey to open the night, senior forward Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice) snapped a five-game scoring drought to give the Colonials (9-8-2 overall, 7-3-2 Atlantic Hockey) an early lead. But the Falcons would score a pair of unanswered goals in the third period including the eventual game winner with just nine seconds left in regulation to pick up the win.

Blandina put the Colonials up 1-0 at 14:47 of the second period with his third goal of the season. Senior forwards Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) and Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) tallied assists on the goal. Bentley (6-9-3, 6-3-2) would spoil the Colonials' unbeaten 8-0-1 record when leading after the second period as well as the program's perfect 4-0-0 record in one-goal games. Brett Switzer scored just 1:28 into the third period to tie the game at 1-1 for Bentley, and Alex Grieve would notch the game-winning goal with nine seconds left when he lifted a slap shot off the cross bar and in.

Senior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made 23 saves in goal for the Colonials but fell to 5-6-2 on the season. Branden Komm picked up the win in a 30-save performance for the Falcons to improve to 6-7-3 on the year.

Friday's game marked another stellar performance by the RMU penalty killing unit as the Colonials shut out the Falcons on three power-play chances. Robert Morris allowed just one shot on goal while down a man in the contest to improve to 78-for-83 (.940) on the year. The Colonials went 0-for-2 on the power play in the loss.

Robert Morris returns to action on Saturday night with the weekend finale at Bentley. The Saturday matchup is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start at Ryan Skating Arena.
