Park, Pa. - In its opening College Hockey America (CHA) series, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team swept its opponent
Penn State University by winning game two of the series, 4-1. The win marks the fourth straight for the
Colonials.
The RMU scoring effort was primarily balanced throughout
the contest as eight different skaters tallied points. Senior assistant captain Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Jr. Senators)
continued her stellar play from Saturday as the forward scored her first goal
of the season in game two against Penn State, while she also dished out an
assist. The assist moved Delaney into a
tie for third all-time in assists with 41 career assists.
The Colonials scored the opening goal of the contest just 1:55 into the
first period. Coming off the RMU penalty
kill, forward Dayna Newsom (Oakville,
Ontario / Oakville Ice) scored a shorthanded goal after passes from senior
forward Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg,
Manitoba / BC Breakers) and junior defenseman Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats). The assists mark the second and third of the
season for Kindret and Pollock. Newsom's
shorthanded goal is the first of the season for Robert Morris and also marks
the first of the career for the senior captain.
With 12:40 on the clock in the first period, sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) scored her sixth goal in two games to put the
Colonials at a 2-0 advantage over Penn State.
The goal came off an impressive backhanded shot after passes from
Delaney and sophomore defenseman Kelsey Gunn (Smith Falls, Ontario / Niagara
University). Gunn's assist marks her
first point in a RMU uniform.
With 3:50 remaining in the first period,
Delaney, from close range, tallied the first goal of her senior campaign. Senior defenseman Jamie Joslin (Richmond
Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) passed off to classmate Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton,
Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) who found Delaney in the slot for RMU's third goal of the game.
Penn State came out strong for the entire
second period and most of the third as it held Robert Morris scoreless until
19:47 of the third period. During this
time, the Nittany Lions would tally a score of their own. At 13:41 of the third period, freshman Micayla
Catanzariti scored her third goal of the season after passes from Birdie Shaw
and Jill Holdcroft. The score brought
Penn State within two goals of RMU.
With 2:23 left in the game, Penn State would
pull goaltender Nicole Paniccia in an attempt to score an extra-attacker goal,
but RMU denied the chance.
With 13 seconds left in the game and still an
empty net for PSU, Joslin ended all hope for the Nittany Lions as she scored an
unassisted goal to put RMU up 4-1. The
goal is the second of the season for Joslin.
Senior goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg,
Manitoba / Wayne State University) received her first start of the season
between the pipes for the Colonials. Brian
stopped 19 shots to earn her first win at Robert Morris.
In the series with the Nittany Lions, the Colonials
dominated statistically. RMU outshot
Penn State 96-35 in the two game series while outscoring the Nittany Lions 11-2. The Colonials won 77-of-111 faceoffs and the
RMU penalty kill unit successfully killed PSU's eight power play opportunities.
Senior forwards Delaney and Thomas each
registered five points in the series while sophomore Rebecca notched
six points.
The victory this afternoon moves RMU to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in CHA play.
Robert Morris returns to action as it travels
to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI in a two game non-conference series. Games are scheduled for Fri., Nov. 16 and
Sat., Nov. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
