PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Jan. 25, 2012 – The Robert
Morris men's ice hockey team fell 3-0 to Atlantic Hockey regular season champs Air
Force on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 1,403 at the Clearview Arena.
The Colonials (15-14-5 overall, 13-9-5 Atlantic
Hockey) and the Falcons skated evenly through the first period as both teams
had quality chances at each end of the ice.
In the period, Robert Morris outshot Air Force 12 to 9. With the
Colonials on the penalty kill to start the second period, Air Force scored the
first goal of the games as Scott Holm finished a break-out play for the
Falcons. Air Force would double their
lead as John Kruse put home a rebound goal with less than a minute remaining in
the second period.
Air Force would put the Colonials away in the third
period as Scott Mathis put home a deflected pass behind senior netminder Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay
State Breakers). The game would end
minutes later as Jason Torf picked up the shutout. Ostergard would end the
night with 31 saves while his counterpart stopped all 24 Robert Morris
shots. Freshman Cody Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) led the
Colonials with three shots on goal. On
the defensive side, eleven Colonials contributed to a team total of seventeen
blocked shots on the evening. Robert
Morris ended the game 0-for-3 on the power play after scoring with the man
advantage in three-straight games.
The Colonials will return to the Clearview Arena as
they host a first round series of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament starting
Friday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m. Robert
Morris will host the American International in a best-of-three series with the
second game on Saturday, March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday March 4th
at 7:00 p.m. if needed. In their only
series of the season, the two team split a pair of games at Clearview Arena
with both teams earning a 2-0 victory.
