MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. / Mar. 31, 2012 – Talia Waskowicz
tied the Robert Morris women's lacrosse single-game record with seven goals as
the Colonials picked up their seventh-straight win over St. Francis (Pa.) on
Saturday, taking down the Red Flash 18-13 at Joe Walton Stadium.
“We did a great job today of playing our game and
our style - using our speed to generate scoring opportunities,” Robert Morris
Head Coach Katy Phillips said. “It was a good team effort, and now we have an
opportunity to build some momentum for the rest of the NEC season.”
Robert Morris (4-7 overall, 2-1 NEC) never trailed
in the contest and benefited from two goals from Waskowicz (Pittsburgh, Pa. /
North Allegheny) and Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) in
the game's first minute. MacKenzie Lawler (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos) would add a
pair of goals to build a 4-0 lead for the Colonials before St. Francis (Pa.)
would rally with three-straight goals. After the Red Flash cut the deficit to
one, the Colonials would fire right back with five-unanswered goals – two from
Waskowicz, two from Kristin Yoviene (Easton, Md. / Saints Peter and Paul) and
one from two-time defending NEC Rookie of the Week Erin Mossop (Schenectady,
N.Y. / Guilderland). Waskowicz and Jessica Rutherford (Pylesville, Md. / North
Harford) would each add two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half as
the Colonials went into halftime up 13-6.
St. Francis (Pa.) (2-9, 0-3 NEC) would pressure the
Colonials in the second half, outscoring the hosts 7-5 in the final stanza. But
Robert Morris' offense was too much to overcome. Courtney Sicinski
(Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) added a pair of goals in the second half
while Stefany Gale (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) would add her first
career goal at 13:27 of the second. After netting five goals in the first half,
Waskowicz would add two more in the second including the game's final goal with
one second left on the clock to tie Alana Beck for the RMU single-game goal
record, originally set on April 18, 2010. Waskowicz also added an assist in the
win to end the game with eight points – tying for the third most ever in a
Robert Morris game. The sophomore leads Robert Morris with 29 points and 26
goals this season.
O'Donnell, who entered the game ranked ninth in the
nation with 2.10 caused turnovers per game and fifth with 21 total, led the
Colonials with six caused turnovers in the win. Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md.
/ Century) picked up the win for Robert Morris to improve to 4-7 for the year.
Robert Morris continues its current home stand with
a 4:30 p.m. NEC contest against Sacred Heart on Thursday.
