MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. / April 22, 2012 – The Robert
Morris women's lacrosse team closed out the 2012 season with a 19-11 win over
LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium. Angelina Gasparo picked
up her first career win in net while five different Colonials recorded multi-point
games.
Talia Waskowicz (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny)
led RMU with seven points and four goals for her third hat trick in the last
four games and sixth overall for the season. Cara Hernandez (New Albany, Ohio /
New Albany) tallied a career high six points and five goals in the win while
Rachel Engel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) tied a personal-best with five
goals in the win.
After the Blackbirds took a 1-0 lead at 28:16 of
the first half, Robert Morris (7-10 overall, 5-4 NEC) tied the game less than
three minutes later with Hernandez's first of the day and Engel would tally 15
seconds later to kick off a seven-goal run for the Colonials, who would
maintain a lead for the rest of the day.
Erin Finnegan (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) notched
her first goal of the year 15 seconds later on a free-position shot to cap a
swing of three goals in 30 seconds for Robert Morris before Waskowicz added a
pair of tallies at 22:59 and 21:28, respectively, and Hernandez capped the stretch
at 19-12. LIU Brooklyn (1-15, 1-8) would make a brief rally with four-straight
goals midway through the half, but the Colonials would keep re-extend the lead
to 10-5 with goals from Rachel Cox (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake), Hernandez and
Engel. The Blackbirds would make it a 10-7 game in the final minute of the
half, but Engel would clinch the hat trick by scoring her third of the day with
one second left in the first to send the Colonials into the break up 11-7.
After outshooting the Blackbirds 24-10 in the first
half, RMU would bring the differential down to 17-13 in the second half yet
still double its opponent's offensive production – outscoring LIU Brooklyn 8-4
in the second stanza. After the Blackbirds opened the half with a quick goal,
Robert Morris would piece together the third of four scoring stretches in the
game with a pair of goals from Waskowicz and one from Hernandez to take a 14-8
lead. The two Northeast Conference foes would swap goals three times in the
middle of the second half with RMU finding goals from Cox and Engel before
Jenna Carey (Marriotsville, Md. / Liberty) would kick off a three-goal stretch
to close the game for Robert Morris. After Engel made it 18-11 with 2:06
remaining, senior Emily Carlo (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) netted
her first career goal in her final collegiate appearance with 1:00 remaining in
the game. Carlo would also tally a game-high five caused turnovers and six
ground balls.
Gasparo (Philadelphia, Pa. / Nazareth Academy) made
seven saves to pick up her first career win.
