RMU Blanks the Beavers, Earns First Sweep

Jessica Dodds pushed away all 22 shots in the victory

Box Score Bemidji, Minn. – The Robert Morris University women's hockey team earned their first sweep of the 2013-14 season, as they defeated the Bemidji State Beavers this evening, 3-0.

A day after junior goaltender Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School) stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Beavers, freshman Jessica Dodds (London, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) turned away all 22 shots on goal to earn her first career shutout.

Unlike yesterday when the Colonials were held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, RMU would break through 9:06 into the game. Freshman forward Maeve Garvey (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) found fellow classmate Brittany Howard (St. Thomas, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) in the offensive zone, and Howard pushed it past Bemidji State goaltender Brittni Mowat for her second goal of the season. Senior defenseman Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) was credited with the secondary assist.

The Colonials would extend their lead to 2-0 at the 12:25 mark thanks to some help from the Beavers. Junior forward Rebecca Vint (Caldeon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) was tripped up by Allie Duellman on a scoring chance and earned a penalty shot. Vint capitalized on the opportunity, burying it past Mowat for her first goal of the season.

RMU would set the final score at the 7:43 mark of the second period. Senior captain Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) would gather a pass from junior defenseman Erin Staniewski (Strathroy, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes), and the forward set off the horn with her first goal of the season. Howard earned a secondary assist on the score, and in turn registered the second multi-point game of her career.

The Colonials held a 37-19 advantage on faceoffs and outshot Bemidji State, 28-22. RMU was penalized just three times for a total of six minutes and finished 0-5 on the power play. The three penalties are a new season low.

Up next for the Colonials is a two-game set with No. 7 Boston University. RMU welcomes the Terriers into 84 Lumber Arena for Homecoming weekend, with the first of the two games starting at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night.
