Cleveland, Ohio – The
Robert Morris University men's basketball team concluded play in the Keigthley Classic Saturday and opened a four-game road trip with an 87-74 loss to Cleveland State at the Wolstein Center.
RMU slipped to 3-3 overall on the 2013-14 campaign with the setback, while the Vikings improved to 3-2.
The Colonials opened the game on fire, converting seven of their first 10 shots from the field in building a 17-7 lead at the 13:50 mark of the first half.
Senior forward
Mike McFadden (Newark, N.J. / Technology) contributed seven points during the opening salvo, while freshman forward
Jeremiah Worthem (Philadelphia, Pa. / Math, Civics & Sciences) scored five points.
Despite the double-digit advantage, Robert Morris would go over 10 minutes without a field goal, allowing Cleveland State to grab 29-22 edge thanks to a 22-5 surge.
Senior guard
Karvel Anderson (Elkhart, Ind. / Glen Oaks Community College) snapped RMU's drought without a field goal thanks to a jumper with 2:37 to play in the first half, and the Colonials outscored the Vikings, 7-4, to close to within 33-29 at intermission.
Robert Morris couldn't sustain the momentum at the start of the second half, as Cleveland State grabbed its first double-digit advantage, 39-29, thanks to a three-pointer from Charlie Lee with 19:17 to play.
The biggest advantage of the contest for the Vikings came with 14:17 remaining, when Lee converted another three-pointer to give Cleveland State a 53-35 cushion.
The Colonials responded with a 19-6 run that helped RMU close its deficit to 59-54 as junior guard
Charles Oliver (Scotch Plains, N.J. / Lakeland Community College) hit a pair of three-pointers and Anderson scored four points.
Cleveland State weathered the surge by Robert Morris, however, pushing its lead to 71-58 after Marlin Mason hit a three-pointer with 5:50 to go.
Worthem paced the Colonials with 16 points, converting four of his five shots from the field, including his lone attempt from beyond the arc, and going 7-for-12 at the free-throw line. He also tied for team-high honors with five rebounds.
Anderson added 14 points despite going 0-for-6 from beyond the arc, and junior forward
Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony) finished with 13 points on the strength of a 7-for-8 showing at the stripe.
Bryn Forbes led six players in double figures for Cleveland State with 18 points, while Lee added 17 points, four assists and a pair of steals.
Robert Morris continues its four-game road trip Tuesday, Nov. 26, with a 7:00 p.m. tip at Buffalo.
