Colonials Clash with Crusaders, Emerge with 5-1 Win

Five different goal scorers propel Robert Morris to victory.

Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – November 23, 2013 – The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.

Just 74 seconds after Robert Morris (2-8-1, 2-3-1 AHA) allowed Holy Cross (3-9-0, 3-4-0 AHA) to tie the game, 1-1, in the third period, Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) recorded the game-winning goal that was the first of four unanswered goals in the final frame for the Colonials.

Five different Colonials found the back of the net for RMU in the victory as the Colonials headed into the Thanksgiving break with a victory.

Playing an afternoon game following an evening game the night before, the two teams would participate in a scoreless first period that saw Robert Morris limit the Crusaders to just six shots on starting goaltender Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs).

It appeared as if the two teams were heading towards a deadlock after two periods of play as well, but Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) had other ideas.  On the forecheck, Lynch intercepted a pass back to a Holy Cross defender and streaked in on a breakaway.  Having already hit a pair of posts in the game, Lynch deked to his backhand before bringing the puck back to his forehand.  Crusader goaltender Matt Ginn bit on the deke and Lynch slid the puck past Ginn's outstretched leg for a 1-0 Colonial advantage.

Holy Cross would tie the game at the 5:30 mark of the third period with a goal off of an offensive zone faceoff win.  After the win, the puck squirted to Sean Gustin who beat Shafer to make the score 1-1.

Jacklin and the Colonials would respond just over a minute later to allow Robert Morris to regain the lead.  An initial shot by Evan Renwick (Calgary, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) was stopped by Ginn, but the rebound was kicked out to Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) who quickly got the puck back towards the cage.  The puck trickled past Ginn and sat untouched in the crease until Jacklin slammed it home while positioned at the left post for the 2-1 lead.

RMU's advantage doubled when Jeff Jones (Revelstoke, British Columbia / Merritt Centennials) made the score 3-1 just past the midway point of the third period.  Defenseman John Rey (Turnersville, N.J. / Amarillo Bulls) stopped a Holy Cross rush and got the puck going in the other direction with a pass to Lynch.  Lynch carried the puck into the offensive zone as Jones drove to the front of the crease.  Lynch lifted a pass over a Crusader defender right to the blade of Jones' stick allowing Jones to chip the puck over the pad of Ginn.

The Colonials would pick up a power-play goal for the third game in a row as it took the man advantage unit just 21 seconds to make the score 4-1.  Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo. / Wenatchee Wild) netted his second power-play goal in as many games as he crashed the net and cashed in on a rebound opportunity.  Jones entered the offensive zone with the puck and sent a cross-ice pass to Jacklin who was waiting in the right-wing circle.  Jacklin ripped a shot on goal as Ginn made the save but could not cover the puck as Cope came barreling in to ensure the puck made it across the line.

The contest was capped off with an empty-net goal by Wydo with 63 seconds remaining.  Defending against the extra attacker, Lynch blocked a shot in the defensive zone and sprung Wydo in all alone with an outlet pass.

Shafer finished the contest with 23 saves for his second win of the season.

Robert Morris will have a week off before hitting the road for a pair of contests against Bentley on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7.
