Byrne-Houser Breaks Own School Record at Furman

The Robert Morris University men's cross country team continued its 2013 campaign Saturday by placing eighth out of nine schools at the Furman Invitational in Greensville, S.C.

The host Paladins won the invite with a team score of 35. Rounding out the top five were High Point (63), Duke (64), Georgia Tech (70) and Georgia (146). The Colonials finished with 244 points.

Leading the way for RMU was senior Mac Byrne-Houser (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic), who broke his own school record in an eight-kilometer course thanks to a time of 25:25.68 to finish 48th individually.

Sophomore Ryan Brown (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) placed 62nd, posting a time of 25:51.11. Brown's time ranks right behind Byrne-Houser as the second best time in school history for an eight-kilometer course.

Rounding out the top five for the Colonials were freshmen Ryan Hertzog (Glenville, Pa. / South Western) and Matthew Haupt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Our Lady of Sacred Heart) and senior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport).

Hertzog posted a time of 26:05.80 to finish 67th, while Haupt earned 73rd with a time of 26:36.51. Gentile placed 77th thanks to a time of 26:52.44.

Robert Morris returns to the course Saturday, Sept. 28, with the Father Bede Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis U. in Loretto, Pa.
