RMU Finishes Second at Father Bede Invite

The Robert Morris University men's cross country team continued its 2013 season Saturday afternoon by finishing second out of nine teams at the Father Bede Invitational in Loretto, Pa.

Hosted by in-state rival Saint Francis U., Central Connecticut State won the team title with a team score of 24 points. Robert Morris compiled 92 points, followed by the Red Flash (115), Wagner (127), Juniata (134), Bryant and Mount St. Mary's (156 each), Sacred Heart (171) and Fairleigh Dickinson (232).

Pacing the Colonials was senior Mac Byrne-Houser (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic), who finished ninth with a time of 27:33.

Four student-athletes finished in the top 25 individually for RMU, including freshman Ryan Hertzog (Glenville, Pa. / South Western) and sophomores Richard Lednak (Apollo, Pa. / Kiski Area) and Ryan Brown (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley).

Hertzog took home the top time by a freshman at the meet, navigating the eight-kilometer course in a time of 28:14 to earn 16th. Lednak finished two spots behind Hertzog in 19th at 28:25, while Brown placed 22nd at 28:37.

Closing out the top six runners for Robert Morris were seniors Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) and freshman Matt Haupt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Our Lady of Sacred Heart).

Thompson finished 35th with a time of 29:08, while Gentile posted the exact same time to place 36th. Haupt finished right behind his two teammates in 38th place at 29:10.
