Moon Township, Pa. –
Junior Rachael Kotula (East Berlin, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) of the Robert Morris University women's outdoor track & field team makes her first appearance in the NCAA Championships Wednesday when she competes in the javelin at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Kotula became the second female student-athlete in RMU history to qualify for the NCAA Championships by placing 11th at the NCAA East Preliminary Round (5/24/13) in Greensboro, N.C., on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Kotula finished with a personal-record toss of 47.04 meters (154'4") to win the first of three flights, and she was also the only student-athlete from the first flight to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The distance ranks eighth in the Robert Morris record book.

The javelin for the NCAA Championships is slated to take place Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. eastern standard time, and Kotula enters the meet at No. 5 of the second flight. Each of the top eight finishers in the event will earn All-America First Team status, while finishing ninth through 16th earns the student-athlete All-America Second Team accolades.

At the 2013 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in West Long Branch, N.J., on the campus of Monmouth University, Kotula finished second thanks to a final tally of 45.46 meters (149'2"), the second straight year she's finished second and earned All-NEC Second Team status.

Kotula joins former Colonial Stephanie Kuhn (2004-07) to compete in the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, a 2012 inductee into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame, finished 23rd as a freshman in 2004 with a toss of 41.70 meters (136'10") and 14th as a senior in 2007 thanks to a distance of 45.41 meters (148'11").
