The Colonials sweep Air Force for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – January 25, 2014 - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team picked up its first sweep Air Force since the 2005-06 season with a 5-3 victory on Saturday evening at the 84 Lumber Arena.

With the victory, Robert Morris (8-13-3, 8-6-3 AHA) now has a five-game unbeaten streak, including going 3-0-1 in the first four games of a six-game homestand.

Three second-period goals provided the offense for the Colonials as RMU withstood a rally from Air Force (14-8-4, 9-5-3 AHA) in the third period while adding an empty-net goal to finish off the Falcons.

Midway through the first period, Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) got Robert Morris on the board first with his team-leading 16th goal of the season.  Wydo beat Chris Truehl, the starting goaltender for Air Force, with a backhand shot after collecting an outlet pass from RMU's defensive zone.

Less than four minutes later, Air Force would tie the contest, 1-1, with a power-play goal from Adam McKenzie.  McKenzie collected the puck after the original shot beat Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) but caromed off of the post right to McKenzie's stick for the game-tying goal.

Entering the second period tied, Robert Morris would collect a trio of goals in the frame to take a 4-1 lead.  The first of those goals was a short-handed marker provided by Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers).  Lynch picked up his fourth shorthanded goal of the season, matching the season and career marks in Robert Morris program history by beating Truehl on a breakaway just 48 seconds into the period, to take a 2-1 lead.

At the halfway point of the second period, the Colonials would capitalize on a power-play opportunity to make the score 3-1 in favor of the home team.  Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) notched his seventh goal of the season after finishing off a cross-crease pass to beat Truehl.

Two minutes later, David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) would increase the Colonials' lead to 4-1 with his second goal of the weekend.  Friedmann finished off some tic-tac-toe passing after his linemates forced Air Force into an offensive zone turnover.

Up three goals heading into the third period, Robert Morris allowed Air Force to hang around in the game as the Falcons picked up a pair of goals.  The first of those two goals came off of a blocked shot by RMU that bounced right to Ben Persian who beat Shafer to make the score 4-2.

With Truehl pulled for an extra attacker, Air Force would make the score 4-3 as the Falcons picked up a goal from Chad Demers.

The Falcons would pull Truehl for a second time in search of the game-tying goal, but Brandon Denham (Milton, Ontario / Oakville Blades) put an end to those hopes with his second empty-net goal in as many games to make the final score 5-3.

The Colonials will conclude their six-game homestand by hosting a second service academy in as many weeks when Army comes to the 84 Lumber Arena on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
