PITTSBURGH, Pa. – January 31, 2014 – Closing out the month of January on home ice, the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 4-0 shutout over Army on Friday evening. The Colonials picked up their first shutout since Feb. 8, 2013, a span of 36 games, with the victory over the Black Knights.
Making his 22nd start of the season for Robert Morris (9-13-3, 9-6-3 AHA), sophomore goaltender Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) earned his second-career shutout by stopping all 23 shots he faced from Army (3-19-0, 3-15-0 AHA). Shafer also contributed on the offensive end, recording his first-career assist on the second RMU goal. Shafer improved his record this season to 9-11-3 while lowering his goals-against average to 2.88 and seeing his save percentage improve to .915.
Coming off of a weekend where he collected his 50th-career goal, junior forward Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) earned his second-straight three-point game with two goals and an assist in the victory. With his two goals, Wydo now has 18 for the season, a total that is the fourth-highest in a single season over the ten-year history of the RMU hockey program.
The Colonials got on the board with five minutes remaining in the first period when sophomore forward Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo. / Wenatchee Wild) collected a loose puck and potted his third goal of the season. After a shot from the left-wing boards was stopped by Parker Gahagen, the starter in net for Army, the rebound was kicked around in the slot before landing on Cope's stick who tucked the puck in around the goaltender's outstretched leg.
Wydo's first goal of the evening came with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame. With Robert Morris on the power play, Shafer set up the breakout from behind his net where a defenseman picked up the puck and found Wydo streaking down the center of the ice. Receiving the pass in the neutral zone, Wydo dropped the puck behind the lone Army defender and proceeded to retrieve the puck in the offensive zone where he ripped a shot past Gahagen from the right-wing circle to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.
65 seconds into the second period, Wydo netted his second goal of the game after throwing the puck towards the net. Collecting the puck in the left-wing corner below the goalline, Wydo threw the puck towards the slot where it deflected off of an Army defender and behind Gahagen to give RMU a 3-0 advantage.
Robert Morris would collect a second power-play goal in the third period when sophomore forward Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) scored his 12th goal of the season. After the forecheck forced Army to turn the puck over behind its cage, Lynch emerged from the right-wing corner with the puck and got off a shot that found the top-left corner of the net behind Gahagen.
Sophomore forward Brandon Denham (Milton, Ontario / Oakville Blades) improved his individual point streaks to six games with an assist in the victory.
Shafer became the second Robert Morris goaltender to record an assist this season; freshman goalie Brandon Lane (Oakville, Ontario / Kanata Stallions) picked up an assist against Air Force on Nov. 16, 2013 in his first-career start.
With the book closed on the month of January, Robert Morris won seven of their nine games played (7-1-1), the most victories in a single month in program history.
Robert Morris looks to continue its strong 2014 campaign with its first game in the month of February tomorrow evening when the Colonials will face off against Army in the final game of the season series between the two squads. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the 84 Lumber Arena.
