Colonials, Orange Continue Series Theme in 1-1 Tie

With two ties this weekend, the all-time series between RMU and Syracuse stands at 9-9-8

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's hockey team played its fourth consecutive overtime contest this afternoon, but the result remained the same from Friday as the Colonials and Syracuse University skated to a 1-1 tie from 84 Lumber Arena.

The all-time series between Robert Morris (4-9-3, 1-3-2 CHA) and Syracuse (3-6-7, 2-1-3 CHA) now stands at 9-9-8 following the teams' second straight tie.

The Orange struck first once again just three minutes into the game. A turnover in the Colonial offensive zone led to a prime opportunity for Syracuse as Melissa Piacentini fed Julie Knerr for a one-timer goal.

RMU believed it tied the game later in the frame, but video review waved off the tally. Fresh off her record-breaking performance from a night ago, senior captain Rebecca Vint caught an Orange defenseman off-balance with two dekes, then lifted a backhanded shot that was stopped by Syracuse netminder Jenn Gilligan. The rebound tricked to senior forward Katie Fergus, who would loft it top-shelf, but a review revealed the net was dislodged after Vint crashed into Gilligan.

The Colonials rebounded from that disappointment by killing off a lengthy five-on-three power-play to close the opening frame.

RMU would get its tying goal with 5:17 remaining in the second period on a power-play. A slap-shot from senior assistant captain Katelyn Scott was saved, but the puck found its way to freshman forward Katherine Murphy. After her attempt was stuffed, sophomore forward Mackenzie Johnston cleaned up the mess by lighting the lamp for her second goal in as many games.

The Orange responded in the third period and overtime with some long spells in their offensive zone, but sophomore goaltender Jessica Dodds and her defense stymied each attack to preserve the tie.

Dodds made 34 saves on the afternoon.

Robert Morris steps out of College Hockey America (CHA) play next week with a non-conference meeting against Ohio State. The Colonials defeated the Buckeyes on their home ice last season, 2-1, and will look for a similar result on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:05 p.m. from 84 Lumber Arena.
