Late Run Lifts Youngstown State Over RMU, 89-81

Moon Township, Pa. – Youngstown State outscored the Robert Morris University men's basketball team, 17-9, over the final four minutes of regulation to grab an 89-81 victory Tuesday at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Knotted, 72-72, after senior forward Lucky Jones knocked down a jumper on a feed from sophomore guard Kavon Stewart with exactly four minutes to play, Marcus Keene took over for the Penguins, scoring 11 points to bolster YSU to the win. He knocked a three-pointer to break the deadlock and also added a triple with 1:42 to go that pushed the advantage for the Penguins to 80-75.

Youngstown State improved to 5-4 overall on the 2014-15 campaign with the victory, while the Colonials slipped to 2-5.

"We didn't compete the way you need to compete to win a Division I game," head coach Andrew Toole said. "It was one thing after another that we didn't do on the defensive end. We need to have better effort from everyone, from the seniors down to the freshmen, if we're going to be successful."

The Penguins shot out of the gates to a 17-7 advantage the first four minutes into the contest and held the lead the majority of the first half thanks to Bobby Hain, who posted 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field while grabbing seven rebounds in the first half.

DJ Cole would give YSU a 37-27 edge at the 5:53 mark of the first half thanks to a jumper, and the Penguins owned a 46-38 lead with just 1:38 remaining before the break when Shawn Amiker connected for a jumper.

RMU answered by scoring the final 10 points of the stanza to grab a 48-46 lead at halftime. Freshman forward Elijah Minnie started the flurry with a three-pointer and scored seven consecutive points for the Colonials, including a dunk with seven seconds left in the half on a feed from Lucky Jones. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Jones stole the ball off Amiker and buried a three-pointer as time expired to give Robert Morris the lead.

The second half featured three ties and four leads changes before the Penguins closed the game on their surge. Keene scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half, finishing 7-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, and also going 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Hain tied for game-high honors in scoring with Keene with 24 points while also grabbing 14 rebounds.

Robert Morris was led by Jones, who scored 21 points off the bench while adding five rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals. Junior guard Rodney Pryor supplied 14 points off the bench, while Stewart and junior forward Stephan Bennett each scored 10 points.

The Colonials continue their three-game homestand Sunday, Dec. 7, with a 1:00 p.m. tip against Buffalo at the Sewall Center.
