Bulls Keep Colonials Winless at Home

Buffalo posts 74-59 victory over Robert Morris in Sunday matinee

Moon Township, Pa. – Justin Moss finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Buffalo to a 74-59 victory over the Robert Morris University men's basketball team Sunday afternoon at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

The Colonials, who have dropped their first three home games to begin a season since 2001-02, slipped to 2-6 overall on the 2014-15 campaign, while the Bulls improved to 5-2.

Buffalo jumped out to a lead of 7-2 in the opening minutes thanks to a jumper from Lamonte Bearden, a three-pointer from Jarryn Skeete and a layup by Moss. The Bulls never trailed in the contest, opening up their first double-digit advantage, 20-10, at the 8:07 mark of the first half when Will Regan connected from beyond the arc.

Regan would give UB its biggest lead before the break, 27-12, with a layup, and the Bulls eventually owned a 33-23 advantage at halftime. Regan supplied nine points in the first stanza for Buffalo.

Robert Morris trimmed its deficit to 36-29 in the first three minutes of the second half thanks to six points from freshman guard Marcquise Reed, who paced the Colonials with 18 points. Moss, however, helped keep the Bulls ahead in the second half, compiling 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds after intermission. He finished 3-for-4 at the free-throw line after Reed's flurry to get the lead back to double digits for UB, 41-29, with 14:09 remaining.

The Bulls took control with a 14-3 surge that allowed Buffalo to open up a 55-34 advantage with 9:25 to go. Skeet buried a pair of three-pointers during the run, while Shannon Evans capped it with a dunk off a steal by Rodell Wigginton.

"We just make so many mistakes that it's hard to win," head coach Andrew Toole said. "What's alarming is we've seen this before. Game after game after game. It's been seven games that we've seen the same thing. We have to coach and teach them better. Everything is worth what you're willing to pay for it. Right now we're not willing to pay the price to win a game yet."

Joining Moss in double figures for Buffalo was Evans, Regan and Skeete. Evans compiled 14 points on the strength of an 8-for-8 performance at the free-throw line while tallying five assists and four steals. Regan chipped in with 12 points and three boards, while Skeete tallied 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Reed finished 8-for-12 shooting from the field and had three steals but suffered six of RMU's season-high 24 turnovers. Senior forward Lucky Jones contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while junior guard Rodney Pryor added 10 points off the bench.

Freshman forward Elijah Minnie notched his first career double-double against the Bulls, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor while grabbing 10 boards. He also added an assist, block and steal.

Robert Morris returns to action Saturday, Dec. 13, by closing out a three-game homestand with a 4:00 p.m. tip against Duquesne at the Sewall Center.

Stat of the Night: Prior to Sunday's game, freshman forward Elijah Minnie had five defensive rebounds in 114 minutes through RMU's first seven games. He finished with seven defensive caroms against the Bulls.
