Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – February 1, 2014 – Closing out a six-game homestand, the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 6-4 victory over Army on Saturday evening.  The win gave the Colonials back-to-back series sweeps for the first time since the 2010/11 season.

Just two minutes after Army (3-20-0, 3-16-0 AHA) tied the game, 4-4, Robert Morris (10-13-3, 10-6-3 AHA) regained the lead with just 2:01 remaining in regulation after a goal by Brandon Denham (Milton, Ontario / Oakville Blades).  Denham picked up his sixth goal of the season to extend his point streak to seven games after crashing the net and jamming the loose puck past the Black Knight netminder, Parker Gahagen.

The Colonials would jump out to a 3-0 lead on Army after the first period of play as Jeff Jones (Revelstoke, British Columbia / Merritt Centennials) netted two goals and picked up an assist in the opening frame.

Jones would assist on RMU's first goal of the game just 2:15 into the period when Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) netted his fourth goal of the season to give the Colonials the 1-0 lead.

The next two goals would come off of the stick of Jones, his fifth and sixth markers of the new season, setting a personal best for goals in a season.  The first of the two goals came with seven minutes remaining in the period after positioning himself at the left post during a Robert Morris power play and deflecting a shot past Tanner Creel, the starting netminder for Army.

Jones' second goal of the period would result in Army pulling Creel in favor of Gahagen as the Colonials held a 3-0 advantage.  With fewer than five minutes remaining, Jones again deflected a shot past Creel in a similar fashion to his previous goal just two minutes earlier.

Army would have a response to RMU's three goals and the Black Knights opened the scoring in the second period with a pair of markers to pull within a goal, 3-2.  Army's first goal came from Joe Kozlak who beat Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) after collecting a loose puck off of a blocked shot just four minutes into the period while the Colonials were shorthanded.

Midway through the frame, Army picked up its second goal after Brian Schultz was in all alone against Shafer after splitting the RMU defense for a breakaway.  Schultz's goal resulted in the lead for Robert Morris being cut to a single goal with the score 3-2.

The Colonials had a response and just 51 seconds later, RMU's two-goal advantage was restored after Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) scored his 13th goal of the season.  Lynch maneuvered away from the Army defense and found himself all alone in the slot with time to bury the shot behind Gahagen for the 4-2 lead.

Just like the second period, Army would net the first two goals of the third period, this time the goals resulted in a tie game, 4-4.  The Black Knights pulled within a goal, 4-3, after Clint Carlisle's shot found the smallest of holes in Shafer's guard with eight minutes remaining in the final frame.

Army pulled even with the Colonials with fewer than five minutes left in the period when Josh Richards capitalized on a rebound and slid the puck behind Shafer and make the score 4-4.

After Denham's goal vaulted Robert Morris back into the lead, the victory was sealed with an empty-net goal from Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) with a minute remaining in regulation.  Wydo's 19th goal of the season capped off the wild contest and gave the Colonials a 6-4 victory.

After a 23-save shutout in his previous outing, Shafer would make 28 stops to earn his tenth victory of the season and improve his record to 10-11-3.

For the second time this season, junior forward Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) record three assists in a single game.  Jacklin first accomplished the feat on Oct. 19 against Niagara and did so again against Army tonight with assists on three of the six Robert Morris goals.

With the victory, this season's senior class – comprised of Andrew Blazek (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Topeka Roadrunners), Jimmy Geerin (Anchorage, Alaska / Burnaby Express), Evan Renwick (Calgary, Alberta / Canmore Eagles), Mac Roy (Chilliwack, British Columbia / Alabama-Huntsville), South, and John Walton (West Chester, Pa. / Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) – tied the program record for victories by a single class.  Over their four years as Colonials, the group has been together for 65 victories, a number that matches equals the program record set by the graduating class of 2013 last season.

After six-consecutive games on home ice, Robert Morris will head to RIT for a pair of contests when the Colonials return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.
