First Half Fuels RMU's 10-9 Victory over Liberty

Robert Morris improves to 6-1 after holding off a late push from the Flames.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - March 22, 2014 - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team defeated Liberty by a score of 10-9 on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Morris (6-1, 0-0 NEC) picked up seven of its ten goals in the first half before holding off Liberty (1-8, 0-0 Big South) in the final stanza after the Flames scored the final five goals of the game.

The scoring got started less than a minute into the contest with a goal for RMU by Emily Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North HIlls).  The goal by Jamison was the start of a four-goal run for the Colonials that included a pair of markers from Corey Karwacki (Sparks, Md. / Hereford) and a tally from Kristin Yoviene (Easton, Md. / Saints Peter and Paul) that allowed Robert Morris to jump out to a 4-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest.

After Liberty got on the board and made the score 4-1, Stefany Gale (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) responded with a goal for RMU to restore the four-goal advantage, 5-1, with 17 minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Flames needed just 30 seconds to get back on the board, but a pair of goals from Yoviene in a span of three minues pushed the Colonial advantage to 7-2.

Liberty picked up the final two goals of the half, cutting into RMU's advantage and making the score 7-4 at the half.

Robert Morris hit the ground running in the second half, netting the first three goals - one each from Jamison, Karwacki, and Yoviene - to hold a six-goal lead, 10-4, just five minutes into play in the second half.

The Colonials were held scoreless for the final 25 minutes while Liberty collected five goals in a span of seven minutes to pull within a goal, 10-9, with 14 minutes remaining in the final stanza.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the contest as RMU held on for the victory.

Goaltender Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) made eight saves in the contest, including five in the second half to collect her sixth win of the season.

Yoviene led the Colonial attack with four goals while Karwacki added three goals and three assists for a game-high six points.

RMU returns to action on Monday, March 24 when the Colonials travel north to take on Canisius in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
