Box Score
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – March 22, 2014 – The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team claimed its first AHA Championship with a 7-4 victory over Canisius on Saturday evening.

Robert Morris (19-17-5, 13-9-5 AHA) was led offensively by Cody Wydo (Southgate, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) who recorded a hat trick in the victory over Canisius and now has 30 goals this season, a single-season program record.  Wydo also tied the program's career goal mark as his three goals now put the junior at 64 in his three seasons at RMU.

After a scoreless first period, Wydo would get the Colonials on the board first just 26 seconds into the middle frame.  Wydo was able to pick the pocket of a Golden Griffin defender in the offensive zone and quickly spun around to get a shot off that beat the Canisius netminder Tony Capobianco.

A Canisius goal would tie the game, 1-1, six minutes into the second period but Wydo would have a response with less than three minutes remaining in the middle stanza.  Wydo drove to the net on the right wing and got off a shot the got past Capobianco and the Colonials held a 2-1 lead after two periods.

76 seconds into the third period, Canisius would tie the game, 2-2, but the Colonials responded just 15 seconds later when Greg Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Amarillo Bulls) gave RMU a 3-2 advantage.

Seven minutes into the final frame, Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo. / Wenatchee Wild) doubled the Robert Morris advantage that made the score 4-2.

Canisius pulled withing a goal, 4-3, with nine minutes remaining but again the Colonials responded.  37 seconds after the Golden Griffin tally, David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) put RMU ahead 5-3.

Just over a minute after Friedmann's goal, the Golden Griffins again pulled within a goal, 5-4, after capitalizing on a power play.  Gibson would have the response for RMU, scoring his second goal of the game 29 seconds later and restoring the two-goal lead, 6-4.

Wydo concluded the hat trick with less than two minutes remaining for the Colonials' seventh and final goal before the celebration ensued after the final horn.

Dalton Izyk (Oswego, N.Y. / Indiana Ice) finished the contest with 27 saves and was named to the All-Tournament Team after going 5-0-0 during the AHA Playoffs.

Gibson and Wydo also earned spots on the All-Tournament Team while Wydo was also named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

RMU will await tomorrow's selection show at Noon on ESPNU to find out its opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The team will be holding a watch party at Primanti Brothers in Moon Township starting at 11:30 a.m.
