Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – April 13, 2014 – Playing underneath overcast skies on Sunday afternoon, the
Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team needed two overtime periods to defeat Central Connecticut State, 9-8, and secure the program's second winning season in its ten years as a Division I program.
With less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period,
Lauren Roberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) scored on a free-position shot to give
Robert Morris (9-4, 3-1 NEC) its second overtime victory this season and first double-overtime win since the 2012 season.
The Colonials held an 8-5 advantage with less than 18 minutes remaining in the second half after
Kaite Breeze (Ellicott City, Md. / Middletown) recorded her first collegiate hat trick. Central Connecticut State (5-8, 2-2 NEC) held RMU off of the board until Roberts' goal in the second overtime as the Blue Devils tied the contest in regulation with fewer than 90 seconds remaining, 8-8.
Jessica Rutherford (Pylesville, Md. / North Harford) opened the scoring almost seven minutes after the first draw control for her 20th point of the season, but the lead was short-lived as the Blue Devils tied the game, 1-1, nine minutes into the opening frame.
Ten minutes would pass until the game's next goal which was scored by
Rhyan Bofinger (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) that regained the advantage for the Colonials, 2-1. The goal was Bofinger's eighth of the season after she had recorded just a single goal in her first two seasons at RMU.
Again, Central Connecticut State would tie the game, 2-2, this time with seven minutes remaining in the opening half.
Roberts picked up the first of her two goals in the contest with less than 90 seconds remaining in the half, but CCSU scored twice in the final minute to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the half, RMU would collect the first three goals of the second frame to take a 6-4 advantage. Two of the goals would come from Breeze as she scored twice in a span of four minutes as the three-goal run was capped off by
Jessica Karwacki (Sparks, Md. / Hereford) just one minute after Breeze's second goal.
Two minutes after Karwacki's marker, the Blue Devils would pull within a goal, 6-5, but the Colonials responded with a pair of goals – Karwacki's second and Breeze's third – to take a three-goal lead, 8-5.
The three-goal advantage was cut to two goals with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation before CCSU scored twice in a span of 50 seconds during the finals two minutes of play to force overtime.
In the two overtime periods, RMU outshot CCSU 6-0 as the Blue Devil netminder Morgan Tullar made two of her 14 saves in the overtime frames until Roberts ended the game.
Tullar's counterpart,
Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century), made five saves while claiming the victory and four of those stops came in the second half as the Colonials snapped a three-game losing streak against Central Connecticut State.
Pentz now has 31 victories in her career and the win over the Blue Devils ties the RMU goaltender with Erica Webb for the most victories in a single season as the two have each recorded nine wins with Webb doing so during the 2009 season.
Along with picking up the game-winning goal, Roberts set a personal single-game best with five draw controls while surpassing 30 career goals and 50 career points.
One game after setting a new NCAA single-season record for draw controls, Karwacki recorded just seven draws as RMU outdrew the Blue Devils, 13-7.
Two Colonials set career marks in the caused turnover department in the victory as Bofinger and
Emily Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) each caused two turnovers to set their personal bests.
With eight shots attempted in the match,
Kristin Yoviene (Easton, Md. / Saints Peter and Paul) has surpassed 200 shots in her career, becoming the sixth Colonial in program history to do so. With 201 shots, Yoviene ranks fifth on the all-time shot list, and is closing in on the record of 289 set by Jenn Collins who played for RMU from 2006 thru 2009.
The victory matches the program record for wins in a season with nine, first accomplished during the 2009 season when the Colonials went 9-8. After going 8-8 last season, a winning season in 2014 marks the first time in program history that RMU has strung together consecutive seasons of .500 play or better.
Prior to Sunday's victory, RMU had never won a NEC contest that went into a second overtime, losing the previous three contests to have done so that includes the program's only triple-overtime contest.
RMU will conclude its three-game road trip with a single-game on Friday when the Colonials travel to take on in-state rival Saint Francis U. at 1:00 p.m.
