Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team took on its first-round opponent in next week's Northeast Conference Tournament to kick off the final weekend of regular season action on a rainy Friday afternoon. The Colonials fell to Wagner, 9-6, as they secured a third-place finish in the regular season with one game remaining.
Junior midfielder
Kristin Yoviene (Easton, Md. / Saints Peter and Paul) became the eighth Colonial in program history to record 100 career points with two goals and an assist in the loss.
Robert Morris (10-5, 4-2 NEC) and Wagner (9-6, 5-1 NEC) started the contest with almost 13 minutes of scoreless action before the Seahawks got on the board first and took a 2-0 lead before RMU found the back of the net.
Down two goals, the Colonials responded with the next three markers to take the lead with fewer than nine minutes remaining in the opening half. Yoviene, along with
Corey Karwacki (Sparks, Md. / Hereford) and
Katie Breeze (Ellicott City, Md. / Middletown), all scored for RMU in a span of just over two minutes.
Wagner answered to tie the game with seven minutes remaining, but Robert Morris picked up the final goal of the opening frame with Karwacki's second tally to take a 4-3 advantage into halftime.
Out of the break, the Seahawks scored a pair of goals in a minute of action to take a lead that they would not relinquish.
Stefany Gale (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) would tie the game, 5-5, eight minutes into the final half of action, but Wagner took control with the next three goals that created an 8-5 deficit for the Colonials.
Yoviene's second goal and 100th career point would cut the deficit to two, 8-6, with ten minutes remaining, but the Seahawks scored the final goal of the game to end the contest, 9-6.
In the loss, goaltender
Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md. / Century) recorded ten saves.
The two teams will meet again in a week at the NEC Tournament where the Colonials will be the third seed in the tournament and Wagner the second seed.
Robert Morris closes out the regular season with senior day on Sunday, April 27 at Noon when the Colonials host Mount St. Mary's and recognize the program's five graduating seniors.
