Colonials Score Season High In Win at Wagner

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team scored a season high in an 86-47 win over Wagner College in a Northeast Conference game at the Spiro Sports Center Monday night. The 39-point margin of victory is the team's largest since they defeated Mercyhurst by a team record 50 points (100-50) on Feb. 19, 1985.

"The thing that I'm most excited about, besides the win, is the energy that we came out with right from the warm-ups," said 12th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "I think that if we understand that we keep coming out with this type of energy will make us so much better. We certainly didn't play a perfect game – we still have a lot to work on – but I'm hoping that this could be a springboard for the rest of the season."

Robert Morris (4-11, 2-2 NEC) had 10 different players score led by 20 points from sophomore forward Judith Sole. Sole was 7-of-11 from the field, knocked two three-pointers, and added eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. Junior guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou added 14 points and six rebounds.

Though they were the only two players in double figures, six different players scored at least five points for the Colonials. The team shot a season-best 51.6 percent (32-62) from the field and knocking down 9-of-23 (39.1%) from three-point range. The Colonials also had a 12-rebound advantage on the glass and dominated the paint to the tune of 42-24.

The Colonials pounced on the Seahawks right off the tip, going a 17-0 run to snap a 2-2 tie and take control just seven minutes in. Navarro scored all nine of her first half points during the surge while Megan Smith and Stamolamprou knocked down three pointers and Judith Sole scored two points. The big surge was part of a 22-2 push that put the Colonials comfortably on top, 24-4, with 11:37 to play in the opening frame.

A 6-0 surge by Wagner threatened to tighten the score, but a 9-0 answer by RMU over the final 1:32 was part of a 15-4 run that put the visiting Colonials on top, 41-18, at the break. Five different players scored during the end push led by five points from Sole.

The Colonials dominated the glass, 24-14, including 10 offensive rebounds. RMU had 20 points in the paint and scored 13 points off 12 Wagner miscues.

A 17-5 run over 6:32 in middle of the second half pushed the Colonials lead to a game-high 41-points, 69-28, when Sole buried a base-line jumper with 7:58 to play. The Robert Morris lead would not get to less than 34 for the rest of the game.

Jordyn Peck was the lone Wagner player to reach double-digits tallying 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting.

Robert Morris returns to the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday, January 17, for a 1:00 p.m. game against St. Francis Brooklyn.
