RMU Rides Record Setting Three-Point Barrage to Win

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team knocked down 13 three-pointers Saturday night to tie the team record en route to a 67-64 win over Northeast Conference rival St. Francis Brooklyn at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The victory lifts the Colonials to 5-11 on the season and 3-2 in league games while the Terriers slip to 4-13 and 1-4 in the NEC.

Sophomore guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou led the three-point barrage going 5-of-9 from long range to tally a career-high 23 points. Stamolamprou was 7-of-12 from the field and knocked down 3-of-4 from the chalk, all in the game's crucial final moments.

"This young team has been on the short end of a lot of close games, so it was nice to see us keep our composure and close out the game," said 12th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "We shot the ball well, especially from three-point range. We are making progress, but we still certainly have things to work on."

A back-and-forth game throughout, the Terriers erased a six-point halftime deficit midway through the second half to take the lead, 48-47, on a pair of Jaymee Veney free throws with 10:36 left. Robert Morris answered in a big way, going on an 8-0 run as Lou Mataly buried a three-pointer, Stamolamprou fed Jocelynne Jones for a lay-up before burying a three-pointer from the left corner to put RMU back on top, 55-48, just 1:16 after the Terriers had taken the lead.

St Francis Brooklyn crawled back into the game on the back of Eilidh Simpson who scored eight of her game-high 25 points over the next eight minutes. When she hit a pair of free throws with 1:07 left, it cut the Colonials lead to one-point, 62-61, and marked the end of seven consecutive points for the Australian-born guard.

Megan Smith answered with a turnaround jumper, only to watch Leah Fechko match it on the other end to make it a one-point game with 16 seconds to play. Stamolamprou calmly knocked down a pair from the chalk with seven seconds left to push the lead to three points. RMU chose to foul the Terriers on the next possession and the plan worked out when Katie Fox hit just one from the line with two seconds left. RMU secured the rebound and Stamolamprou put the game away with 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and less than one second to play.

Junior guard Ashley Ravelli had 10 points and went 3-of-5 from long range and 4-of-6 overall. Forced into a point guard role, she added five assists and had one steal in 30 minutes. Rebeca Navarro tacked on nine points with a trio of treys.

Robert Morris took a five-point advantage in the first half courtesy of a 10-1 surge that was fed by five points from both Stamolamprou and Mikalah Mulrain. The Terriers answered with a 9-3 march thanks to three-pointers from Simpson and Katie Fox. The Colonials had the final say in the first half, however, as Stamolamprou hit a pair of three-pointers and Navarro added another to give the home team the lead, 35-29, at the break with a 9-2 run over the final two minutes.

The Colonials shot a season-best 52.3 percent (23-44) and were 13-of-21 (61.9%) from long range. The Terriers were able to keep the game close by grabbing 15 offensive rebounds to beat the Colonials, 16-0, in second chance points. St. Francis Brooklyn also converted 16 RMU turnovers into 17 points.

Robert Morris hosts Sacred Heart in a 2:00 p.m. game on Martin Luther King Day this Monday, January 19.
