Terriers Surge Past Colonials For 68-63 Win

RMU hits just one of its final 13 shots from the field in final four and-a-half minutes

Moon Township, Pa. – Brent Jones scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and St. Francis Brooklyn shot 66.7 percent (14-for-21) after halftime to post a 68-63 victory over the Robert Morris University men's basketball team Friday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

The Colonials slipped to 7-10 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast Conference, while the Terriers improved to 10-8 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Owning a 29-21 advantage entering the second half, junior guard Rodney Pryor opened the scoring after intermission with a layup to give RMU a 31-21 lead. St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a 13-5 surge to pull within 36-34 as Chris Hooper scored five points and Brent Jones connected from beyond the arc.

Pryor stemmed the tide with a jumper at the 15:35 mark of the second half to give Robert Morris a 38-34 advantage, but a 12-3 run by SFC that featured eight straight points from Jones pushed the Terriers on top, 46-41.

RMU rallied by scoring the next seven points, including a three-pointer and a layup from Pryor, to again grab the lead, 48-46, before Jones connected again from beyond the arc to push St. Francis Brooklyn back in front, 49-48.

The back-and-forth affair continued, as the game featured six ties and 15 lead changes. Junior forward Stephan Bennett would give Robert Morris a 54-53 lead with 6:50 to play thanks to a layup, and after Lowell Ulmer missed a pair of free throws on the next possession for the Terriers, senior forward Lucky Jones pushed RMU's advantage to 57-53 thanks to a three-pointer.

The Colonials couldn't hold the lead, as they concluded the game just 1-for-13 shooting from the field in the final four-and-a-half minutes. In the meantime, St. Francis Brooklyn used a 10-0 spurt to open up a 63-57 lead with 2:03 to play as Glenn Sanabria connected from deep twice.

The Terriers were able seal the victory at the stripe despite owning just a 66-63 lead with 20 seconds to go after Tyreek Jewell hit just one of his two attempts. Lucky Jones went for the tying three-point attempt on RMU's next possession but instead suffered a turnover and SFC clinched the win thanks to a pair of free throws from Amdy Fall.

"The tougher team won the game tonight," head coach Andrew Toole said. "We stopped defending in the second half, and therefore we didn't win the game. We have to try and turn the page. The best thing you can have is a quick turnaround with our next game."

Brent Jones finished 7-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-7 at the chalk to register his game-high scoring total. He also added six assists and two steals. Also scoring in double figures for the Terriers was Chris Hooper and Sanabria, who each scored 11.

Freshman guard Marcquise Reed paced Robert Morris with 18 points and also added five rebounds and three assists. Pryor finished with 15 points before fouling out, while Lucky Jones tallied 12 points and nine rebounds.

Stat of the Night: 19:05 – Time in the second half when senior forward Lucky Jones grabbed career rebound No. 752 to becoming RMU's all-time career leader in caroms. Thanks to his nine rebounds against SFC, Jones now owns 759 career boards.
