Hot Shooting Continues As RMU Upends Sacred Heart

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball continued a trend of efficient shooting Monday afternoon to defeat Sacred Heart, 76-65, in a Northeast Conference game at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials hit at a 45.3 percent clip (29-64) Monday and are shooting 49.4 percent over the last three games.

The Colonials current three-game win streak coincides with its best three shooting games of the year. It started with an 89-47 win at Wagner where RMU went 32-62 (51.6%) from the field and continued with a 23-44 shooting game (52.3%) Saturday in a win against St. Francis Brooklyn. RMU is 84-170 from the field in the last three games, including a 30-71 (42.3%) mark from three-point range.

"It was a real good win for us against a very formidable opponent in Sacred Heart," said 12th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Sacred Heart has had some good wins this year, including a win over Big East member Villanova on the road. It was also really nice to see 10 of our 11 players get in the scoring column. With playing so many players, that's a real plus for us as the season goes on. Each one of them contributed today and I think we're learning about each other as a young team. We're confident that we'll continue to learn and continue to grow."

A trio of Robert Morris (6-11, 4-2 NEC) players reached double-digit points and 10 of 11 found the scoring column. Anna Niki Stamolamprou and Rebeca Navarro each finished the game with 14 points. Stamolamprou was 6-of-14 from the field and have five rebounds while Navarro drained four three-pointers. An efficient 5-of-9 shooting night from Ashley Ravelli led to 12 points.

Battling back-and-forth early on, a three-pointer by Navarro started a 10-0 run that featured a pair of long jumpers from Janee Brown to give RMU a 25-14 lead. The Colonials knocked in 11 of its first 20 shots, but would cool off by missing its next seven shots.

Sacred Heart took advantage with a 10-2 run powered by six points from Katherine Haines and four from Hannah Kimmel. The Pioneers eventually trimmed the Colonials lead to two points, 29-27, as Johanna Lopez finished a traditional three-point play.

Navarro and the host Colonials found their stroke in the waning minutes of the first half, hitting their final three shots to end the half on a 7-0 run and take the lead at the break, 36-27.

Kimmel, who finished with a game-high 23 points, scored nine of those in the first four minutes of the second half. Her hot hand allowed Sacred Heart to go on a 13-4 run and tie the game at 40 when she scored on one of Kati Shepard's four assists at the 16:32 mark of the second half.

Five straight points from RMU junior captain Ravelli quelled the run. After a Lerae Ettienne jumper, Stamolamprou got lay-ups on back-to-back possessions and RMU was back on top, 49-42.

Sacred Heart had one last surge, cutting the Colonials lead to three. Robert Morris ended that threat with a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes. Six different players scored during the decisive push that ended with a 9-0 spurt and the Colonials holding a 68-54 lead and 5:58 to play. The Pioneers could not trim the RMU lead to single digits the rest of the way.

Robert Morris continues NEC play Saturday, Jan. 24, traveling to St. Francis Brooklyn for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
