Colonials Win Dogfight Against Terriers

Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University women's basketball team extended its Northeast Conference win streak to four games winning at the Pope Physical Education Center for the first time since 2010 with a 69-64 win at St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday afternoon. The Colonials improve to 7-11 overall and 5-2 in the league with the victory.

Sophomore Anna Niki Stamolamprou scored 22 points to lead all scorers. The Greek-born guard scored seven points in the final minute of regulation, going 6-of-10 from the field, 4-6 from three-point range and 6-8 from the charity stripe. Junior Ashley Ravelli also reached double-digits with 14 points, 12 in the first half, on a night when 10 of the Colonials 11 players found the scoring column.

"This was a great win for us in a very loud and enthusiastic environment," said 12th-year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. "Once again, 10 of our 11 players scored and all 11 contibuted in one way or another. I have make mention of Ashley Ravelli, who was very sick minutes before the game, and then showed ture leadership coming out and playing the way she did. Anna Niki hit some key shots, contributing seven points in the last minute of the game. We have to continue to take it one game at a time, but this young team is really coming together."

Carrying a four-point, 33-29, lead out of halftime, RMU watched St. Francis Brooklyn (5-14, 2-5 NEC) slowly catch up and take the lead with 12:03 to play when Sarah Benedetti nailed a three-pointer. Lou Mataly put RMU back on top immediately, drilling a three from the corner. The teams would go back-and-forth the rest of the way with RMU building the lead to as many as six points when Jocelynne Jones hit one from the top of the key with just under five minutes left in regulation.

The Terriers would tie the game again at 60 on a long Benedetti two and a Katie Fox trey with 1:24 to play. A trey from the top of the key by Stamolamprou, however, put the Colonials in front to stay. The junior would score seven points in the final minute of regulation helping RMU hold on for a 69-64 win. In addition to the three, she went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

The first half consisted of a series of runs that ultimately ended with Robert Morris holding a 33-29 lead. After the Terriers scored first, Robert Morris answered with an 8-0 run with Megan Smith scoring five points. St. Francis Brooklyn was responsible for the next 10 points, seven from Leah Fechko, to take the lead, 13-8, with 13:55 to play.

The lead remained unchanged for the next three minutes until Ravelli found her stroke. The junior scored 10 consecutive points as a 13-0 surge put RMU on top, 25-17, at the 7:00 mark. The run topped out at 16-2 with a traditional three-point play by Rebeca Navarro giving the Colonials a 28-19 lead.

Robert Morris travels to Emmitsburg, Md., Monday night for a 7:00 p.m. game against Mount St. Mary's.
