Emmitsburg, Md. – The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team went on a 26-4 run midway through Monday night's contest to bury Mount St. Mary's, 68-44, in a Northeast Conference game at Knott Arena. The win is the fifth straight for a Colonials team that improves to 8-11 overall and 6-2 in the league.
All 11 Robert Morris players on the roster scored, the seventh time this season the squad has had 10 or more players find the scoring column.
Megan Smith led that effort with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting that included a three-pointer.
Rebeca Navarro added 13 points, drilling a trio of three-pointers while adding three assists.
"What really excites me about this team is the way they play together. That's evident by the box score where everyone on the team scored," said 12th-year RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "They're much more interested in team success rather than individual statistics. This team still has a way to go, but we are progressing each and every practice and each and every game. We know there are many challenges ahead of us, and I think now we know what it takes to be successful."
RMU shot 49.0% (25-51) overall and was 11-22 (50.0%) from three-point range. The Colonials have now shot at least 45% from the field in its last five games and are shooting 48.7 percent (133-273) during that span.
Robert Morris buried the Mount with a 26-4 run over an 11 minute span between the first half and second half. The Colonials closed the opening frame on an 11-0 run as five different players scored in the final five minutes.
Ashley Ravelli hit a short jumper, then
Anna Niki Stamolamprou scored from the top of the lane. A lay-up by
Janee Brown was followed by two Smith free throws before Navarro finished the half with a trey from the corner.
Smith then took over in the opening minutes of the second frame. She scored 13 of her 15 points in that decisive second half surge, staking RMU to a 51-25 lead with 13:33 left in the game. Mount St. Mary's would never threaten again, cutting the margin to less than 20 just once with 3:40 remaining.
The Colonials jumped on top 5-0 just 42 seconds after the opening tip-off. Navarro nailed a three from the left corner, then got a steal that led to a fastbreak lay-up by Ravelli. The Mountaineers climbed back into the game, tying the score at 8-8.
Robert Morris responded with a trio of treys, Navarro and
Lou Mataly doing it from beyond the arc and
Mikalah Mulrain finishing off a traditional three-point play. The surge gave the Colonials a comfortable cushion before they ripped off 11 straight points to end the frame.
The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host the Bryant Bulldogs in a 1:00 p.m. game.
