Staten Island, N.Y. – Robert Morris University scored twice in 46 seconds to break a 1-1 tie and secure a 3-1 victory at Wagner in a Northeast Conference game Friday afternoon. The win is the third in the last four games for the Colonials who improve to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in NEC contests. The Seahawks fall to 2-10-1 and 1-2 in league games.
The Colonials got on the board in the 30th minute on a long pass from
Kristie Hamilton down the right wing.
Cassie Raymond beat keeper Katie Viscardi to the ball at the top of the box. That left Raymond a wide open net to score her sixth goal of the year. The Seahawks tied the game in the 35th minute, a short through ball from Megan Fritz setting up Sam Jensen's first score of the season.
It would remain tied for much of the second half before a sustained offensive possession led to a corner kick for the Colonials.
Lauren Sulkowski took the corner, sending a long ball to the far post where
Kayla Kelley headed a shot into the far-side netting to put RMU on top, 2-1, in the 84th minute.
Just 46 seconds later,
Lauren Sulkowski was hauled down in the Seahawks box resulting a penalty kick.
Maleha Kureishy took the attempt, firing a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. It was the third fastest set of goals in team history.
The Colonials controlled play throughout the game, doubling up the Seahawks, 22-11, in shots and 4-2 on corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper
Chelsea de Jager made five saves to earn the victory.
Robert Morris returns to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 18, by traveling to Loretto, Pa., for a 2:00 p.m. match against Saint Francis U.
