Loretto, Pa. – You could say the
Robert Morris University women's soccer team "was due" when it went to Saint Francis University's Stokes Soccerplex Sunday afternoon. After all, the Colonials had not won in Loretto since 1999, had a 12-game winless streak dating back to 2002 against SFU and had not recorded a six-point road trip since 2010. And the Red Flash had not lost a Northeast Conference regular season home game since 2009.
But all those streaks came to an end Sunday as the Colonials collected six points over the weekend with a 3-2 victory against the Red Flash following a 3-1 win at Wagner Friday. The victory is the fourth in the team's last five games and puts them at 7-8 overall and 3-1 in the NEC standings. Saint Francis U., previously unbeaten in league games, is now 4-1 in the NEC and 4-10-1 overall.
Erin Ritzer put RMU on top early as she ripped a shot into the lower right corner from 25 yards out, her third goal of the season coming just 1:40 after the opening kickoff. The Colonials pushed the margin to 2-0 in the 29th minute,
Cassie Raymond controlling up top before finding
Kristie Hamilton just outside the box. Hamilton's chip shot was true and RMU carried a 2-0 lead into the break.
Ritzer was in the middle of action again in the 60th minute, this time her shot was blocked, but it still set up a goal. That's because the deflection found the foot of
Lauren Sulkowski who tallied her first goal of the season in the 60th minute.
The Red Flash attempted to mount a comeback, getting a goal from Allison LaDuke in the 71st minute and a penalty kick score from Hallie Rexer in the 89th minute, but couldn't overcome the Colonials lead.
Senior
Chelsea de Jager made four saves to secure the victory. Romina Kunze made six saves while surrendering three goals for the Red Flash.
Robert Morris continues a four-game road trip next weekend at Central Connecticut State and Bryant. The Blue Devils welcome the Colonials in an Oct. 23 game at 5:00 p.m.
